I just saw this bit, are you remivi g the hose from the tank? The bit that's in the tank must stay in the tank and not be removed at any point.....

My procedure was to lay the shower end down, walk the hose around the corner to the tank and dip that end in - usually it would begin flowing water immediately, but it just was not last night. Because water was not flowing through, yes, I removed the end and tried again - multiple times.

I'm missing something here. How did you start siphoning by just dipping the end in the tank? There has to be water flowing downhill to create a siphon. Have your wife hold one end in the tank, well below the surface of the water. Then go suck on the end at the shower drain. You don't need to suck until you get a mouthful of fish feces, just enough to get the water about halfway down the hose. It should start flowing on its own then.

so are you sure the hose is fully filled with water....any air in the hose can cause loss of flow..
