i have lots of snails in my tank and my lfs is selling 3 kinds of loaches, clown, saddleback and horseface. As the clown loaches are too big, i was wondering are horseface and saddlebackloaches any good at eating snails? My tank is 35 gallons if that is any hope as to whether they are suitable for me :) the current stocking is 8 cardinal tetras, 5 rummynose tetras, 5 harlequins, 4 bronze cories, 1 platy and 1 albino rainbow shark. Is there anything else i need to know about these loaches? Saddleback loaches strike me as being the better loaches...

Thanks

Will

It depends on the type of snail you are trying to get rid of. Horseface loaches aren't renowned for chomping snails so it depends on what the saddleback loaches are. If they are a Botia species then they will try to eat most small snails and would probably be your best bet.

saddleback loaches won't do much more than horseface loaches when it comes to a snail population. They might take a few small ones but will probably ignore the bigger snails.

aww

ill jsut have to wait for a zebra loach to come along (or ill ask to see if my lfs can order some in) as its totally unfair putting some clown loaches in to eat the snails

thanks for the info Colin

instead of adding loaches, why not consider flubenol.
currently kusuri sell it as fluke M and that is the only legal way to buy it in the uk now

it is not cheap but well worth it as it has a three year shelf life

well i went to a different fish shop near me today and guess what i saw!
striata botias

so i bought 2 to help eradicate some of my snails, i got them at £3 each, is this a good deal?
