Hi there

my fish are moving into their new tank over the weekend (doing all the usual crap so dont get new tank syndrome)

My tanks temps always stay at 23-24 degrees without a heater

Could i add some tropicals and add a heater to keep them to 23 degrees are there any that are friendly that could go in with the following

i currently have
1 small black moor
1 small fancy
2 medium fancy
1 friendly shubunkin
9 white cloud minnows

8 apple snails

ANY help appreciated

Thanks Sarah

i am particularly interested in plattys but never ever kept them before so anyone any ideas on my above post

Mixing in tropicals with cold water fish is going to make either one group VERY unhappy or both miserable. If you want some platys get a separate dedicated tropical tank.

il second that. get a second tank, dont mix.

Be warned the goldfish will eat your white clouds and platies if you get them at some piont garanteed

They will get on just fine then one day one will be missing then another and so on

didnt know that they've been fine together for the past 2 years i think my fancy's are a bit thick lmao they are always well fed on a variety of foods so hopefully they wont go for the minnows in the future .

did lose a minnow one to a nasty comet (gift from nanny and not wanted)

so the comet went very quickly back to the shop !!!

Ok i'm sticking to coldwater then cos the kids will cry if i get rid of their fish so i'll wait for the kids to get older then sell the buggers ---- fish not kids lmao

OK NEED help on what to add to the coldwater tank then that's friendly and different

i saw some barbs and american flag fish at my LFS but not sure if they are friendly or not anyone know

sorry i know i'm a pain in the #### been keeping coldwater for years but never had tropicals and always just fancys and minnows the basics that the kids love

cheers Sarah xxx

The size of the tank you already have would be useful. Goldfish grow very large so I hope the tank is very large indeed seeing as you have 5 in there. The goldfish alone have an approx combined adult length of over 40 inches when they are fully grown.

Barbs are tropical fish. Don't add them

Weatherloaches are suitable for both coldwater and mid to low tropicals. If you have the space aside from the goldfish, a group of those would be good. They are very friendly and entertaining fish.

THE LFS is selling rosie barbs as coldwater so i'm glad you told me that
What about the american flag fish - are they ok in a community tank ?
and what about leopard Danios i had some giant danios before but didnt get on with them as they seemed quite aggresive i've heard leopards are peaceful any ideas ?

THE fish are currently in a temp tank as had a badly leaking 4 ft tank so they transferred into my Juwel rekord 60
They are moving into a Juwel rio 180 over the weekend which is 40 inches in length

It was not my idea to have all the nanny purchased the little blackmoor and little fancy for the kids as a present last weekend
SHE HAS NOW been told NOT to buy fish but to buy ornaments or give the children money and we will save it in their fishy bank (piggy back lol

We absolutely love our shubunkin (again purchased by nanny when it was tiny) but i feel cruel keeping her in the tank cos she is truely a pond fish , she is so tame though and hand feeds everyday .
We are in the process of convincing the children that she would be happier in great grandads pond --- so in the spring she will be going to live in the pond and we will be back to 4 fancys and the 9 minnows .

Since Those Who Know haven't yet shown up, and usually do just as I'm offering an an amateur opinion, I'll trigger the phenomenon by a bit of a Google.

This offers a bit of info about temperment - much too rare an addition.
and with a tank full of goldies, heavy planting for privacy, etc. becomes a bit tricky.
This is referring to ponds but:

... Rosy Red Minnows:
Almost a miniature version of the Orfe in appearance, the Rosy Red Minnow is a useful pond addition for exploring tight nooks and crannies in a well-planted pond. They are a shoaling fish, and can become very territorial come breeding time, the Minnow is one of the few carps to show aggression. It's a good job it's such a small fish! ...

This has a few more suggestions, with an important caveat regarding otos.

Would like to add to that that plecs and loaches need even more than some clean water conditions, despite their notorious addition to the brew; it's unfortunate that goldfish are such little poop/ammonia factories.

Also:

http://www.gomestic.com/Pets/Fish-Compatibility.35819

... Goldfish have a category of their own because they are unpredictable. Generally they will nip on fan tailed Goldfish or other slow moving tail fish, which is why it is best to keep them by themselves. They do not have problems with Coi (Carp) fish. ...

If yours aren't aggressive and have a very large tank with lots of concealment spots, and the water quality is kept very high, I suppose native minnows may be a possibility.

I have a Central Mud Minnow, who survived being dug out of a drying mud puddle.
They are a hardy, attractive cool water fish, and I did come across a site where they were listed for sale but can't seem to find this right now.

But if you want to find out if any potentially compatable native minnows are available and whether they are, you might try;

http://forums.pondhobbyist.com/forum.php?catid=22

It would be awful if you tracked down some such fish and it turned out not to be happy or safe, but these people may be able to find some attractive, cool water minnow that's perfect.

Lotsa luck

UPDATE

all gold fish going to live at grandads

3 big ones in pond the 2 small ones in 6ft fry tank so the large kois wont eat them then transfer to pond in spring :)

If they're all going into ponds and big tanks then that's fantastic. They'll have a lot more space to grow and swim.

You could use your 40 inch tank for a really nice community of tropical fish now. You can use the media from the filter in the goldfish tank and put it into the new filter if it isn't cycled. If you can fill the filter to it's full capacity with used media then you won't need to cycle as it will already be done. Just add a heater .

In a 40 inch long tank you have a lot of great choices of fish.
