Homebase Household Ammonia Problem?

Hi everyone, are new to forum and Tropical Fishkeeping so please excuse me if this is a completely stupid question.
Have just started a Fishless Cycle using Ammonia. Popped down to local Homebase as was the only place I was able to obtain it from.
I have added the Ammonia to the tank and it's gone completely cloudy. It hasn't gone bubbly at all just incredibly cloudy. I would just like to know if this is a normal reaction and if it will pass, or should I be more concerned ?? Would be grateful for any help anybody can offer me as I'm a bit worried if done something wrong. Thanks.

I think it's prob a bacterial bloom. Which I believe is good during a cycle,means it's working.

I've just finished the Bacteria bloom stage. Water was clear before I added the Ammonia now it looks awful. Like someone's filled it with cloudy lemonade.

shake the bottle of ammonia and if its foamy on top its not the right one,

Yeah I checked for foaming but there wasn't any. Wondering if the amount that Pets at home told me to add was too much.

Thank you sooooo much angelfishguy. The amount was WAY over !!!! they toldme I should start with two 5ml spoonfuls !!! I only have a 20 gallon tank. Problem solved. Thank you once again. Really grateful.

Oh ***** Mind you, it is impressive that a chain LFS even told you to add Ammonia!

haha, you might want to do a waterchange to bring the ammonia down if its above 8ppm, although its not essential.

If you're looking for syringes, which are quite useful for dosing ammonia imo, go to boots, they have a 5ml and 1ml plastic syringes.

You could always be cheaky and ask at a local vets or chemist if they have one spare.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. have added a small amount of the Ammonia to a large jug of warm water and no problems whatsoever, It definately must have been the quantity. Spoke to the lady on the phone and she apologised saying she had her Litres and gallons mixed up. Totally gutted as have had to do a water change and all was going really well. I guess these things are sent to try us lol

I'm really impressed that someone at P@H gave you that advice, even if it was a little off!

If you're doing a fishless cycle it will go much better if you have your own test kit for the water. You want a kit that has tests for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, with pH also being important as it can (and probably) will change during the cycle and affect how things go.

Have bought the API Master Test Kit as found the dip strips that were recommended a bit hit and miss. Have just found the fishless cycling link (wish i had earlier lol) Have calmed down a bit now and armed with the advice from this forum, hopefully i'll be back on track very soon. Relieved it wasn't the Ammonia that was dodgy as it was hard to come by.
