So here I am thrilled to be back from the LFS with my new additions, a pair of black swordtails and a trio of red platies. I am carefully acclimating the fish to my water when my girlfriend says "Honey, what does Nancy (one of our kittens) have?"

Well, one of the swordtails had jumped out of my 5-quart pail that I use to acclimate fish to my water (It is where the cats can't get to it) and Nancy has picked it up off the floor. I quickly rescue the swordtail and put it back in the pail. All is well now. The fish appears to be okay :D

The moral of the story: Cover the acclimation pail :*)

haha! what is it with fish and cats? heh. i used to have acouple of black sword tails, male and female and when i first got the male he was all black, and when he got comfortable in my tank his tail turned Yellow, yours might do that or if they already have, it was really really cool looking! but they both got ick. i havnt seen any other sword tails that color since. but im glad that the cat didnt eat your fish. :p post some pics of them.

:) I'm so glad that he survived! You were lucky to have found him in time.

One time, my male Neon swordtail leaped out of the tank in the middle of the night. I found him the next morning on the floor . . . dead.

I have sad news to report. When I looked just a few minutes ago, the jumping male swordtail had passed away. He looked fine last night before I went to bed and was swimming okay this morning. However, I guess the ordeal of coming from the LFS, jumping out of the bucket and landing on the carpet only to be picked up by a kitten was too much for him. :(

He was cool. RIP blackswordtail.

I will always cover the pail with a plastic plate or something from now on. I feel bad that this happened to him. I guess the "Fish gods" know that my intentions were pure.
