Okay so today I saw a video on youtube about filtration and media choices, and One guy suggested that you open up a pillow, and remove the interior part and use this as filter wool to catch all the particles? Would this seriously work?

My converns would be the chemicals possibly used in the manufacturing of the pillow (anti-fungal treatments etc)?

Some materials are coated with fire proofing chemicals and i would imagine pillows would be one of these. No idea if they're toxic or would leech into the water or not though.

For how expensive filter wool id from ebay i would just stick with the proper stuff.

It's a bit risky, as many of those kinds of fillings have a fire retardant added; other than that it's exactly the same as filter floss, which can be bought in rolls quite cheaply on eBay anyway; not worth the risk IMO.

I think I'll just stick with the media cartridges made for my filter. Using other substances like that worries me that they could cause contamination.

This fellow is right, but not entirely. The filter media of choice for box filters can also be added to HOB's and other filters to assist in the filtration process. This is made of 100% polyester fibers and is the same thing that can be purchased for stuffing pillows, toys, quilts, etc. However, there are also fillers made out of cotton or other recycled materials, along with the polyester, and these you will want to avoid. If you rip up a commercially made pillow, there is no telling what the contents are composed of.

100% polyester fiberfill can be purchased at a sewing shop or department store. It's an item that is often put on sale at a price that is lower than what you would pay for the same product in an lfs.
