Hilly Effect With Substrate

Hi all
just looking for some ideas how to bulk up sand substrate to form a hilly effect,
could i put a plant based substrate down first and then top off with sand?
if yes,what plant substrate,
i would like the one corner of tank to be roughly 8 inches.
the plants will be various mosses and grasses.

Sand will mix with other substrates eventually.

Yes, the sand will eventually end up at the bottom of the substrate and the planted substrate will be at the top. You can build the level up by siliconing polystyrene blocks to the base... or pieces of perspex.

Or peices of slate, or cork tubes, or cork tiles etc... you want something that wont allow the substrate to seep through, but at the same time withstand the weight, cork tubes worked for me, siliconed together.
