Over the last month I have noticed that the level of nitrates in our tap water has changed. Whether this is due to me not testing properly originally or it actually changing I don't know. However It is now around 40ppm or even 80ppm maybe (most likely 40) it's so hard to tell on the API test kit. My tank by the end of a week is obviously then higher than that. Is there anything I can do to lower this?

Are you following the API instructions to the letter? Shake bottle 2 for 30 seconds. When you are all mixed up, shake the vial for 1 minute.

Even if you do have 40PPM it's nothing to worry about, concentrations at 40PPM are perfectly safe for fish.

400+PPM for most species, the more sensitive ones will probably begin to suffer at lower values.
