High Ph

So, my well water has a very high ph. API liquid test says around 8.2-8.3. I want to go heavy planted (no african cichlids, as I have a 90 gallon full of them), with a peaceful, community tank. Are there any good schoolers that can deal with this ph, cause I've tried glowlight and neon tetras, and they didn't do very great, and now they are off in my friends tank, doing just fine! Or, is this high Ph going to be too much of an issue, and should I use my RO system that spits out around 6.2 to lower the Ph to a reasonable range?

Once you go down the RO route, you have to continue that all the time, with EVERY water change. Of course, that is possible, but it is up to you. Are you willing to go there EVERY TIME?


If I were you and I had the interest in going the RO route, since it seems you already have one... I would probably go with a 50/50 split between the well water and the RO water, I suggest that because it would be easy to remember and easy to measure. That would probably put you at about a 7.2 pH and would drastically drop the hardness that you are dealing with. This would open the door to many of the tetra, rasboras, etc.


Really though, its up to you. I don't know any shoalers that would work in that pH and (assumed) hardness. You could go with livebearers, but they don't really shoal. The pH is a bit high, even for mollies, but I think that they would do very well.
