I got 3 swordtails from my local pet stopr around 10 days ago, i have just found out that they all have dropsy. Can the dropsy infect other fish? so far 2 of the swordtails have died and the other is on its last legs. Will dropsy die with the fish or will it spread through the tank?

dropsy is not a disease. its a symptom

maybe the disease the fish have which is causing the dropsy is contagious though.

I have had them for 10-11 days so i think its not. I just wanted to make sure because i have some realy expensive fish and i dont want them to die because of my local stores neglegence.

All the more reason to quarantine new fish before adding them to an existing community tank. I've learnt this the hard way and I have recently had to make my head rule over my heart, because right now I could not juggle fish around easily to leave my Rio240 empty to act as a QT.

Quar fish no matter what the source. I've gotten fish from breeders I've known for years, they get a quar. They've gotten upset with this, I've told them OK, you can be in charge of meds & water changes if something doesn't work out. Haven't had a taker on that one yet.

Always quar, no matter what the source. It's not only to keep your existing stock safe, it keeps the new additions free from exposure to anything that your existing fish are not bothered by. Fish that are shipped, bagged & transported and so on are stressed to some degree, stress reduces immune response.
