Help With White Spot And Platys

Stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph, did the whitespot ned cause the ammonia reading.
How often do you do a gravel vac and water change.

Well we never had a testing kit before we got the white spot so we don't know but we've done a 75% water change, then checked the water and it was a lot better but then the next day checked the water and the nitrite was dangerous again so we phoned the lady at the LFS and she said to do another 50% water change which we did and we did a test again and it was a lot better and then she said not to feed them for three days and then test it again but we are aiming to do a 25% water change every week after then when its ok, we are just waiting for the gravel vac to come but how often do you recommend we use that. x

Gravel vac once a week with a water change.
Good luck.

we put some neons in five

Since you are a novice to the world of fish keeping, I felt it best to advise you that neons are delicate fish and can get swim bladder easily.

To help prevent this don't let the food float on the top, release your fish flakes just under to water surface.

The fact that your water perameters are bouncing back up after doing a water change may mean your tank is still cycling.

And please don't forget to dechlorinate your water before putting it into the tank.

Hope all improves for you soon

Thanks guys, well I've done another test today, ph is good but nitrite is still in danger levels. I've phoned the woman at the fish shop and she says I'm going to kill all the fish if it stays like this. I'm to take out the 8 fish, completely clean out the tank and clean the gravel 5 times then put it all back in and start again so that's what I'm going to do. She thinks there is something in the gravel and that we didn't wash it enough the first time round. Then when we've done all that we have to take more tests yikes x

Hi there im kinda new to this and also has the same problem with nitrate, you can buy nitrate minus from any good pet shop and adding this gradually will reduce your levels as it did mine, but make sure you keep carrying on with 25% water changes also.

Do you mean nitrate or nitrate xx

Well we've done all the woman said at the LFS and now all the fish seem to be getting ich back again tut, so we're just going to turn up the heat first instead of using meds x

We had a nitrite problem is that the same thing lol. Well we did the water change and now the new fish have developed white spot tut. We are trying the temperature method this time as we don't want to use anymore meds at the moment with the fish only having them last week. Funnilly enough, the white platy has now perked up, maybe it was the nitrite that was making it ill or it likes it warm x

We really don't know what to do for the best now. The lady at the LFS told us the temperature method is no good and to reduce the temperature and medication with WS3 again for the white spot so that's what we are going to do, then there is the problem of the nitrite again. After doing a 100% water change, after two days the nitrite is bank to danger levels. The lady at the LFS said there must be something in the tank that is causing it so we've done another 25% water change and took everything out except the gravel, filter and the plants. She also said that the Jewel fish tanks aren't very good for filtering and we should get another under gravel filter. This is so confusing. Any advice would be appreciated. The white platy is now poorly again bless it x

Don't buy an undergravel filter more hassle then there worth.
Buy an internal fitler to back up the juwel.
Don't turn temp down never heard that you turn it down with whitespot.

We'd turned the temperature up to 90 so we're just putting it back down to what it was so we can use the meds. What problems are there with undergravel filters? What sort of internal filter is best x

No good for large fish they get blocked up, small fish can get stick underneath them.
Had them there a nightmare to be honest, outdated equipment.
Eheim aqua balls are good filters.

So we've got another filter in there and treated twice for the white spot with WS3 and bought a little hospital tank that goes in the main tank just to separate the white platy that keeps getting picked on and now the orange platy is picking on the blue platy, it keeps pecking it. This is driving us crazy, the neons seem absolutely fine after being treated for white spot but we can never seem to keep the platys happy, if the orange one isn't pecking the white one, she's pecking the blue one and keeps pecking until they get weak, so now I've had to separate the orange one and put her in a sciv, what's going on, is it the after effects from the white spot again or what, how come the neons are ok with being so small but the platys aren't x
