Hi all

I'm from the UK and have a 57 gallon Tank (68 us Gal)

Just yesterday i noticed that most of my platys have started swimming near the top of tank within the outflow jet stream of my filter, as if mimicking swimming into a current of a stream. They did this for nearly 2 hours yesterday and again for nearly 2 hours today.

Is this normal behaviour or do i need to be worried? some of my female platys are pregnent but not quite ready to drop their fry yet.

My chemical balances are all fine as i checked these this morning.

I am probably worrying over nothing but would appreciate anyone who could put my mind at ease, Thanks

This sounds very much like "shimmies" .... the fish swims but's going nowhere... imo it is caused by a sudden pH change, and (again) imo I have fixed this (accidently or intently) by raising the water temp slightly and adding a little coarse salt ... (same way as I've always treated Ich) worked for me, but probably some other (more scientific) cures out there....

Thanks i have just checked my PH again which has dropped to 6.6, I have just added a sera fluid to try and help increase it. I will test again in the morning if no improvement will call into my local aquatic shop to try and discover what could be causing this sudden change.

Any other advice is much appreciated

Well, everything might be just fine and they are enjoying playing in the stream, but since you brought it up...

You'll need to be much more specific about your test numbers in order for members to help. What type of test kit is it and exactly with tests have you performed and what test numbers did you observe?

edit: sorry, this was sitting in the edit window since this morning - had never hit reply, you can just ignore it if you want

Q-Unit, I have had fish play in the filter return for days on end. It is not an unusual game for fish. Een my cories like to swim in a filter current. That is not the same as staying listless at the top of the tank and just shaking. When they do that, something is wrong and the first thing to check is water parameters. As WD said, a good listing of current water parameters will help the diagnosis if something is actually wrong. A quick run down of your maintenance schedule might give us even more clues.
