Help With My Halfmoon Betta Setup

Yeah filter must be on all the time. Like said above, you can try redirecting the outlet or repositioning the filter so the force is taken by the tank wall. You can also try and secure a piece of filter sponge on the outlet, which should help distribute the flow :)

5 gallons is great and I think you've got some room for shrimp/african dwarf frogs/snails/otocinclus. Don't want to go overboard though - 1 betta + 4 roomates is enough and I'd only go for a pair of frogs/snails if you pick that option.

Khulis need more room, they get pretty long and need loads of sand to play and hide in.

Definitely get a heater. Even in the summer the night temperatures can drop quite low and bettas really should have their tank at a stable 77-81F.

Make sure you move his old filter across or at least move the media (sponges etc) from the old filter into the new one. You'll need to existing beneficial bacteria to keep the life-support system in the tank going.

A 5gallon will be big enough for just your betta and the shrimp khuli loaches need groups of 6+ and a minimum of 35litres with a large foot print for ground room.

Bettas like their tanks WARM so make sure the temp is warm around 26 celiuse or roughly 72? f (someone correct me if i'm wrong) i highly reccomend you buy heater anyway.
Actually it's more like 27 degrees c. and 80 degrees F.

I am going to try something tomorrow with the filter. It's the waterfall thing that is making the current kind of strong. When he gets near there, he gets sucked in then pushed out. I haven't seen problems with the intake. He seems happy though. I am not sure what type of plants i have. They are long, but i am not sure. I have 4 different types of plants. They are at the back of the tank. I have one in the front inside a log. He seems active. He made a bubble nest today too haha. Unfortunately, I had the filter turned on so it got pushed around, so he made them at different places. It's pretty funny, he goes under the waterfall part of the filter and flares lololol. Oh, His red coloring isn't really like a bright red. It's kind of faded. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgIx3gv-L4k He looks like that halfmoon except he is red. His white part looks alright. Is there anything i can do to enhance his color? I am feeding him hikari betta bio-gold. Would feeding him brine shrimp or blood worms make him look better?

Well, varying their diet is always a good thing. They will LOVE chasing around brine shrimp and daphnia. Blood worms are great too

Oh okay. I think i will pick up brine shrimp and blood worms for him tomorrow. I think i will get them from hikari also. Since he has a bubblenest, if i get a female will they be able to spawn or breed or yeah lol?

Nooooooooooooooo

Put a female in the tank, one or both will be killed. End of.

Breeding Bettas takes a lot of money, research and care. You'll end up with about 200 fry, with each male (up to 125) needing a seperate container, and the females need a 40 gal tank.

Males and females shouldn't be housed together. The only exception is when they have both been carefully conditioned for breeding and even then it's just for as long as it takes them to "wrap".

Don't even think about breeding until you're very experienced with bettas. It takes a lot of time and money and you need to find ways of individually housing all the males (and there could be 50-100) in heated tanks with clean water (so that means a lareg filtration system or daily water changes). It's not like breeding guppies!

Whoa sounds too complicated for me. I picked up the bloodworms today. I betta fish looks at it, eats one then swims away. Then comes back to eat another and yeah. I fed it 3 today. Is that supposed to happen? When i fed him the pellets he stayed up there. I guess he likes the hikari pellets better?

He ate them which is a good sign!

Sometimes it takes them a while to get used to the food - just give him some time and persist and you'll soon have him begging for them.

Do bettas sleep with their eyes open? I was freaking out because he was laying on a plant and not moving. I thought the filter hurted him, but he started to move around a few hours later. He was acting normal so i felt better. Was that jsut him sleeping? He's doding it again, i guess i am up late soo i get to see him sleep?

oh okay. How do you know if your betta has fungus?

they can get fluffy white cotton like growths on their body or mouth and if it's finrot a big give away is black crumbleing tips to the tail and a the tail becoming noticably shorter :good:
