This is my first time here but was hoping to get some advice please. I have one electric blue acara in with some red head tapajos, black phantom tetras and some red eye African tetra. Over the past few weeks I've noticed he's been doing this funny shaking in the sand and also tugging on the leaves of java fern and shaking.I understand this to be a matting thing but as he's the only acara in the tank it left me a little confused and wondering if there is something wrong with him. He seems to be the boss of the tank and I've never seen any aggressive behaviour towards him from the others. Some help on this would be grateful appreciated many thanks. ?

Hi welcome to the forum :) Firstly your tank sounds very cool so please post some pictures!

With your male, cichlids can try and breed by themselves or at least go through the motions. I've had a lot of female cichlids lay eggs by them selves so I don't see why males wouldnt try and do the same.

I would leave him to it as adding an other Acara could upset the cart a bit too much and cause more problems than it would fix. If you have other tanks you could separate the pair from the main tank or each other it may be worth a try but if its just the one tank, I'd leave him to it :)

Hi thanks for your reply. I do have two other tanks but probably not suitable for as they are much smaller. I've add a couple of pics. He seems to swim around well and eats well and alot of the shaking is in the corners of the tank, maybe he sees his reflection? He also sees off any of the others when he's doing it if the swim near him. 50% water changes weekly and all parameters are as they should be.
