Help With Fish Stocking Please (120l)

Well took a major set back today.

Went to what i've been told is a good place for fish, plants and other aquarium stuff today, it's a huge shop that does all pets.

Went downstairs to look at the fish, what a disgrace, they had over 50 fish of 4 different species in the same 500cm square tank.
They had some white nearly see through fish in with some Bristle nose (of which they had at least 20), there were 3 dead fish in the tank and the bristle nose were eating 2 of them.

Unfortunately ALL the other tanks were the same, the only half decent ones being the salt water tanks.

The plants were even worse, out of 4 huggeeeeeeeeee tanks of plants, i honestly couldn't find 1 even half decent one between them.
There was that much algae that you literally couldn't see the back of the tank.

Everyone i've spoke to so far have said that's the best, i really am not sure i want to see the others if that's the case.

I'll ask around but if anyone knows any respectable sellers in Athens (Greece) i'd be grateful if you could point me in their direction.

cbr6fs,
I would avoid that particular pet shop.If you bring home fish from a place like that, you are likely bring home trouble. I like most of your stocking list but I'm concerned that the angel is not going to do well in a tank that is that shallow. What this would mean to me is to leave out the angel and substitute another small fish or 2 instead. Maybe another couple of harlequins would be a better choice. They don't require the extra tank depth.

I like rasboras, guppies, mollies, corydoras and tetras. Thinking of kribs or maybe german blue rams now (my friend from here suggested them to me :))

I've found a couple of Greek forums so i've asked for people to recommend some other local shops.

I suppose i could fill the tank with a few extra harlequins of another cory or 2, but i really fancied a nice bright mid tank fish, or a centre piece fish i think you call them.

Is there any other bright fairly large (for a 120l tank) fish that would go well with the other fish chosen?

Cheers

I'm currently cycling a 96l tank, so like yourself I'm trying to decide which fish to go for.
There's so much choice!

I'd be inclined to get more smallish fish, rather than a few larger ones.
But obviously it's a personal choice.
I just think a shoal or two would look more amazing than one fish moving around the middle of the tank.

My tank is smaller than yours, so you have a bit more flexibility in terms of choice, but here's what I'm planning:

6 black neon tetra
6 glowlight tetra
3 honey gourami (1 male, 2 female)
5 corys (not decided on the exact type, 3-lined look nice)
a rock shrimp or two

Once it's running smoothly I can always add a few more if there seems to be plenty of space.

Have fun researching all your choices, Let me know what you decide :good:

Sorry to hijack this topic but i'm looking into getting a 96l tank and I'm baffled as to what put in it so if you can keep my updated on how yours goes it would be much appreciated !! I'll also be following this thread aswell to see how cbr6fs gets on !!

Thanks to guys on a Greek fish keeping forum i've found a great shop really local.

Must have spent at least 1 hour looking at all the well kept fish and plants:)

In the end i decided to go for 2 x Corydoras schwartzi.
I'll give these 1 week to settle then either get 4 more or i may get 2 cory pandas and 2 cory adolfo's.

Having problems finding Harlequins as well, but they did have some lovely Neon Tetras and some black neon tetras.

My friend was supposed to have collected the Goldfish this afternoon but was not able to, so i was really worried how the verrryyyyyyyy small corys and the Goldfish would get along.
Really weird the corys are obviously shoal fish as they follow the Goldfish EVERYWHERE, even stranger though the goldfish looks to be really enjoying the company, the odd times the corys don't swim with the Goldfish he comes back for them

I'm told he'll be gone tomorrow now, so hopefully they keep on good term during the night.

Cheers

Goldfish are coldwater fish, they don't do well and are prone to infection when exposed to heat. These infections can be passed on and the corys could get ill so the goldfish needs to be removed soon :D

Welcome to the forums mark :D

Thanks Lew :good:

I'm really unsure about what's right and what's wrong for goldfish.
Every decent article i've read have said Goldfish do best at 24c.

I've tried various temps since having cloudy (the goldfish) and i've gotta say he/she certainly looks to be more at ease and although i don't know if it's possible for a goldfish to be happy, he/she seems happiest at 24c.

The Corys should also be kept a 24c from what i've read.

So it's difficult to know what to think.
The corys look very young, so i'm sure they're just following the Goldfish through natural instinct, but they do all seem to enjoy each others company.

I have promised the Goldfish to someone though so it will have to go, but so far it seems to live happily at 24c

Can't seem to get em to sit still long enough for a pic all together.

1 of the corys did stay still long enough for a quick pic:

Also bought 2 more plants today, i'll ask here first save opening another thread straight away.
Does anyone what plants these are please?

Thanks Matt.

Looks like both are fairly easy to keep but the Anubis needs a fair bit of light.

:)

The anubis is a low light plant, its only special requirement is not to plant it but place it on an object ie bogwood, which from the photo yours is. It is a slow grower
The vallis requires higher lighting levels. If its in a low light area it can take carbonates from the water, but in most peoples cases this isnt a problem. It can grow quite fast.

Well the goldfish wasn't collected again today, looks like i'll have to take it round on Saturday.

Not really sure if i'm happy or sad, it'll be really sad to see it go the 2 Cory's have adopted it as their leader, they're following it around absolutely everywhere.

What gets me as even weirder though is the goldfish actually waits fer them, or even turns round and swims past them if they don't follow.

Be good to get a definitive answer on if keeping a goldy at 24c is bad for it's health, as i said yesterday most the goldfish specific sites are recommending 24c
I'll stick a thread up in the coldwater section here see what the consensus is.

Thanks for the info and advice on the plants Matt, much appreciated.

Cheers
