I can't speak for this brand but my JBL filter has a 'button' on the top which acts like a pump. When I had attached the filter to the tank via the input and output pipes I pumped this button until the filter was full of water. This effectively syphoned water into the pump thereby ensuring there was water in the entire 'circuit'. I turned it on and, after a bit of gushing, it calmed down to silent functioning.

I'm sure someone will be able to help you with this actual brand.

Just checked Eheim's site for that model - unfortunately the link for the instruction manual doesn't work - no file found.

If it doesn't prime automatically, suck on the outlet pipe slowly until you see the water rising up it so the canister is full of water, then switch on. That might do the trick, if not you can pump water into the intake pipe using a siphon pump, whilst the filter is switched on. Once it gets started up it will be a very good filter I am sure!

The 2222/2224 models don't have the little pumps like the next bigger models. The trick with these models is to get everything put back together after a cleaning and then open up the hose stops, give enough suction on the output (suck or actually it's really nice to have the little suction ball one-way valve device that Eheim sells) to get a gravity inflow started. Then be very patient and just let the cannister thoroughly fill with water, (REPEAT: that is the key, letting it fully fill) giving it time and maybe some small vibrational shakes to get some of the bubbles out. If you've done that, then plugging it in will usually result in a quick and nice flow and you can then just leave it to burp the last bubbles out bit by bit or you can do a little tilt and lightly shake process to hurry the rest of the bubbles out of the system - giving you more faith that you won't have a big bubble come along later and break the flow.
