Hi ive rescued 3 goldfish 10 days ago from a neglected tank.one of them was bigger and healthy, eating and well behaving so after a few days ive moved him to a pond. the other 2 are weak and arent eatingone of them trying to eat but spitt it immidietly and the other dosent show any interest. ive treated with Kanaplex 3 doses and now in the middle of Furanol treatment with no change. ive noticed about 3 times since ive rescued them of a weired behavior of shaking like theyr trying to shake something of them and darting. today one of them darted and almost jumped out of the tank. I started to add some NaCl to the tank 2 days ago and im doing it very slowly so far there are 2 tspn in the 40 liter tank. The antibiotics so far dosent show any effect so im thinking on trying anti parasite med like levamisole. I have it but when im mixing it in the water it smells weired. Did anyone noticed a weired smell when using levamisoleHCL? do you have any advices on what should i do?
There are no external signs for illness and the parametres are 0,0,5
thank you

I don't do relationships. If you have a sick girlfriend, talk to a specialist or your friends :)

If fish are rubbing and flicking on objects, they usually have an external protozoan infection and anti-biotics do nothing for that.

Never use medications unless you know what the disease is because you often make it worse.

Anti-biotics like Furan and Kanamycin should only be used if there is a known bacterial infection that has not responded to normal fish medications. Improper use or misuse of anti-biotics can lead to drug resistant bacteria that can kill people, animals, birds and fish.

----------------------------
The best general broad treatment for goldfish and livebearers is salt. It kills most bacteria, fungus and protozoans and does not affect filters or caused drug resistance in parasites and diseases.

If you get new goldfish, livebearers, or rainbowfish, add salt straight away. Use the maximum dose for them (see below).

You can add rock salt (often sold as aquarium salt), sea salt or swimming pool salt to the aquarium at the dose rate of 1 heaped tablespoon per 20 litres of water. If there is no improvement after 48 hours you can double that dose rate so there is 2 heaped tablespoons of salt per 20 litres.

If you only have livebearers (guppies, platies, swordtails, mollies), goldfish or rainbowfish in the tank you can double that dose rate, so you would add 2 heaped tablespoons per 20 litres and if there is no improvement after 48 hours, then increase it so there is a total of 4 heaped tablespoons of salt per 20 litres.

Keep the salt level like this for at least 2 weeks but no longer than 4 weeks otherwise kidney damage can occur. Kidney damage is more likely to occur in fish from soft water (tetras, Corydoras, angelfish, gouramis, loaches) that are exposed to high levels of salt for an extended period of time, and is not an issue with livebearers, rainbowfish or other salt tolerant species.

The salt will not affect the beneficial filter bacteria but the higher dose rate will affect some plants. The lower dose rate will not affect plants.

After you use salt and the fish have recovered, you do a 10% water change each day for a week. Then do a 20% water change each day for a week. Then you can do bigger water changes after that.

I agree with Colin. Sounds parasitic in nature and salt is a great treatment option. Good luck! Please keep us posted.

Hi ive treated withe levamisole hcl yesterday. so far no improvment-they stii refuse to eat. today one of the started to shake and swim rapidly eventually jumped out of the water for a sec. its the 3rd time i see him doing that he did that last time a few days ago befor the levamisole.it seems that the levamisole didnt help with whaever thats on him

Levamisole only treats intestinal thread/ round worms. It does not treat anything else.

If fish are jumping out of the water then make sure the water quality is good (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and less than 20ppm nitrate).Try doing a 75% water change and gravel clean the substrate each day for a few days. Then add salt at the maximum dose rate. Keep the salt level up for 2 weeks and see if it helps.

If the filter is established and more than 2 months old, clean the filter if it hasn't been done in the last 2 weeks.

Increase aeration/ surface turbulence to maximise oxygen levels in the water.

Update: after treating with kanaplex and furanol i started to dose with salt in order to decrease osmoregulation stress and also treated with levamisole for external parasites. All of those treatment showed no effect and after about 2 weeks of treatments and the fish arent eating the fish with the popeye started to show signs of dropsy. Ive started treatment with prazipro and that actually worked! the dropsy signs strated to fade and for the first time i saw poop in the tank! now its about 1 week later, the popeye fish is eating and pooping but the other one isnt.. im oretty sure that he didnt ate all this time. so one of the fish is showing big improvment but the other isnt improving. he dosent show any signs, except occasional rubing against object and moving one of his fins very fast like hes trying to shake something off. I wanted to ask what do you think i should do? should i try again with antiparasites? thank you

ok its been about a mounth, the one that got better is doing great, the other still isnt eating.he is trying to to eat ocasionly but spit the food immediatly. After a few doses of prazi without any improvment i tried to treat him with Ektol Fluid by JBL thinking maybe the flashing is due to some kind of external bacteria that infected the wounds that the parasites caused. after i used it the flashing has stopped but he is still isnt eating.. its been a mounth without him eating.. he isnt geting worse but i really want to help him.. any ideas for other treatments that might help?

After a month he has to be eating some or he’d be dead by now. Maybe he waits until you walk away. Try feeding and turning the lights off for a bit. What do you feed. Try some frozen blood worms. Not freeze dried but frozen.

thats not true. fish can live up to 3 mounth without food. its of course not a good thing for them, but they can survive much longer then mammels. Im monitoring the tank, the food is still there after a few hours, theres no poop at all.

Really? Maybe certain types of fish can but not fish in general. Certainly not goldfish. I’m sorry but you’ve been misinformed.

It has been proven that goldfish can take around 8 days to two weeks without food and still be fine. Therefore, you should only ask a friend or a neighbor to feed your goldfish if you are planning to be away for longer than two weeks. PetGearlabs.com

It depends on the size of the fish, the condition of the fish and the water temperature.

Large well fed fish with fat reserves, that are living in cool water, can go for longer than smaller fish in warm water.

Baby fish might last 2 days without food, big goldfish (10 inch body size) should be able to live for several months without food. Some whales and sharks go without food for 6 months and then gorge themselves when food becomes available.

The only way any goldfish could survive over a month would be in a pond with algae , plants, or small insects/worms to live off of. Unless, of course, it is in freezing months where they go almost dormant. No normal goldfish in a tank can go 2 months without food. That is not possible. I’m Sorry.

I have had rainbowfish go for 2 months without any food and they only grow to 4 inches long and were in a tropical tank. An adult goldfish should be able to do that too.
