hi guys need some help please.
i have just bought a FLUVAL underwater filter and it says in the instructions if the the venturi system is to be used place the venturi valve into the top of the vent. what is the venturi system as im lost? am i supposed to have this in or not.

is it one of the 'U' series of Fluvals? U1, U2, U3 ect?

the venuri pulls air into the outlet and helps to increase oxygenation of the tank - but it's not critial so long as the filter already distrubs the waters surface enough (otherwise very little oxygen transfer takes place and the fish will find it hard to breathe).

hi its the u3

i have the outlet at the waters surface with the hole that they are saying to put the valve into above the water.

sounds fine - the valve can be turned on or off if you find you dont like or need the bubbles it produces.....so just stick it in.

the veturi is a piece of pipe which connects to the top of the outlet, you dont need to use the pipe as long as the top of the filter is clear of the water, you can adjust the valve but do it slowly, this allows the amount of bubbles blown into the water, which oxygenates the water, hopw this helps

In general terms, a venturi is a narrower or restricted location in a flow path. In a filter system it is often a separate attachment where the flow path is narrowed then expanded again. At the narrowest point of any venturi the pressure drops and that low pressure can be used to draw in water, air or whatever you want. The venturi on my Fluval internal is a snap on device with a hole in the top where I could attach an air line. Since I hate the noise mine makes, I never attach the air line to it but it is available if you want to blow bubbles using your filter flow. They even give you a clamp to attach the air line at the top of the tank and as someone said they give you a valve to adjust or shut off the air flow.
