One of my black tetras has popeye and I'm on day 4 out of 5 for treatment for it and since yesterday he has been hanging out by the heater and just staring at it. Whats wrong with him now?

Popeye is the result of an internal bacteria usually related to dropsy or a viral infection and causes swelling in the brain making the eyes pop. Fish when ill seperate themselves and either hide or dont move much. Is he isolated?

No I thought since he was in the tank with the other fish that they might have caught it and thats why I'm treating the whole tank. Is maracyn good to treat it because on the box it says it treats popeye?

Ive used maracyn as well for bacterial diseases including popeye and it did nothing to help. Maybe in the early stages of a disease it might help, but really would only help in killing the bacteria in the tank as the fish dont swallow it but take it in through the gills and skin. As the fish need a lot of meds to help fight infection then water borne meds dont really do much and injectible meds or meds in feed are really the most reliable way to get fish the dosage they need.

As popeye is a symptom of kidney disease then the next stage is usually dropsy. If you could seperate the fish then using salt and the meds together may help but really i dont hold out much hope. If you cant seperate then if he does succumb to the disease then make sure he is taken out quickly as other fish feeding on him may get the disease.

Well all I could do as far as seperating it is putting it in one of those holding tanks the lfs use before they put it in the bag and that would be to small to properly does salt and maracyn. Should I just continue the meds for the last day and do another round of treatment then if he is still ill I'll put him in the holding container with a air stone and let him pass without spreading infection.

Do the last day of treatment and then do a big water change after 24 hours or whenever it says you can on the med. The container sounds too small and the stress might kill him anyway. I wouldnt personally do another round of maracyn but keep doing water changes with gravel vacs to keep the water quality as good as you can. Really I dont see much else you can do for him unless you want to euthenise him or let nature run its course.

When one of my Mollies had popeye I used Interpet No9. It worked very well. His eye never went back to completely normal but it went down a lot. :)

My new girl betta has popeye too. :-( Appeared today. She's been keeping to herself since she came home. And now she's not eating and her eyes have developed this. I only hope she hasn't infected my other girls. Although she is now seperated. I knew something was wrong dammit. :grr: Am so angry at myself. I think she came home with issues which was why the other girls at the lfs were picking away at her tail. That, stupidly, is growing back already but I doubt she'll get through the night now.
Hugs,
P.

Exophthalmia (a.k.a. Pop-Eye)

Symptoms:

Fish with exophthalmia will have eyes that are abnormally enlarged and protrude from their sockets. In severe cases the eyes may actually burst from the socket, leaving the fish eyeless. Eye swelling is caused by a build up of fluids in or behind the eye.

Cause:

There can be any number of causes for this condition. Possible causes include poor water quality, bacterial infections, viral infections, eye flukes or other parasitic infestations, or piscine tuberculosis. Even though the fish may recover, the protruding eye may remain that way. This should not adversely affect that fish.

Treatment:

Since there are so many possible causes a broad-spectrum antibiotic is recommended, such as Tetracycline, but this treatment cannot obviously guarantee success. Be sure to keep water quality in good condition.

Will this spread to my other fish? If so, could I put him in the holding container with a air stone till I can get some tetracyline?

I wouldn't advise using tetracycline in the main tank as it wipes the bacterial colony out in the main tank, is there anyway you can treat it in issolation.

Like I've said before all I could use is those holding containers that lfs use before they bag the fish and it hangs on the inside of the tank and I could add a air stone. But not sure of the gallons of it. I know its barly half a gallon.

That should be ok then, good luck, is he still eating as the food variety would be better in tetracycline.

I don't think its eating because he is isolating himself from the other fish by staying close to the heater. Will this spread to the other fish?

I depends, couldn't say for sure, it's finding out what caused it, as there is a numbers of things to take into consideration, if he's not eating and spending alot of time near the heater he not good i'm afraid, i would just do a few daily water changes for now.
