My blue/green veiltail has been having a problem recently. We first noticed what looked like fungus strings coming off of his body. I then noticed at the top of his tank in the water these white fungus looking things just float around. It's very frusrating because i'll do a water change and treat with tetracycline and Jungle Fungus Remover but nothing is working, My poor Hurley is developing fast fin rot, i dont know what to do. I changed his water yesterday and did a complete scrub down of the tank and it's all gunked up again. please help, i dont want to lose my little guy he was our first.

First off hello! :hi: to the forum! :fish: :fish:

Now onto your fishy problem....

What type of container do you have him in? Also how big is it, in gallons or litres?

Do you filter your tank? If so, do you remove the carbon?
Are there any other tankmates in with him?
How long do you treat for when you treat him?
How much do you feed a day?

Are you sure it's fungus? Sounds more like columnarius to me. If it is then do a big water change and start treating with Maracyn 1 and 2 right away. Hope your fishy friend gets better soon.

2.5 Gallon Minibowl..i guess its made specifically for goldfish and bettas
I put a filter in when the stuff started to accumulate at the top in hopes that it would infect him more
I remove the carbon when treating
No other tankmates
I treat for 4 days and the do a water change and add new medication
I feed once a day dropping 4 pellets one at a time

I agree - this needs to be tackled with Maracyn. Columnaris is flexibacter - Not fungus. So anti fungals aren't going to work for obvious reasons.
Columnaris is a very quick killer.. I reccomend starting now with maracyn.

Do a 25% water change, and run the carbon overnight till you can get Maracyn Medication or start right away after the water change with Maracyn 1 & Maracyn 2.

Thanks for all your help guys, i did a water change and starting Maracyn 1 and 2 treaments today, i will keep you guys updated on the progress

I want to thank you all for your kindness and generosity, i'll be sticking around here

Well it's a day later and my GF called and told me that he still has the flexibacter on him but it's only been a day so hopefully the treatments start working soon

In my experience with it, it took the full treatment of Maracyn 1 and 2 (which I think is 5 days), and then just to be sure, I did a full water change and treated for another full treatment. It's a hard thing to kill, but if you get it early and treat it good it should go away. I've had it twice here. One of my poor guys had it both of the times and he's doing great now. In fact I'll be breeding him in about a month. So, fish can bounce back from it. I hope your little guy does. Good luck! :good:

Well so far so good. It was five days so I changed little Hurley's water (which was amazingly disgusting with the amount of flexibacter cottony stuff hanging out at the top, but the good news is that it's not hanging on him anymore. I did a full water change and added alittle more maracyn and maracyn 2, i think i'm winning this battle and the little guy couldnt be more happy!
