Help Planning And Cycling My New Tank...roma 125

So ammonia is 0 ppm and nitrite is 0 ppm and nitrate is 5 ppm. My ph has raised to around 7.0. What do you guys think, is the tank cycled?

The fry seem to be doing great, I counted at least 9 last night. The fact they are still alive I'm also taking as a good sign the tank is pretty much done. I hope to add the next panda pretty soon, probably in the next week or so.

Thanks WD.

This will conclude my cycle diary, with nitrate now about 10 ppm and the ph around neutral. Double 0's for ages. I'd say it took around 40 days to cycle with fish. I never did see a nitrite spike though.

Unfortunately I have some disappointing news - the panda didn't make it. I got in from work tonight and found him dead. I was in my LFS at the weekend asking for some more pandas and was told they were not going to be getting any more in anytime soon as they had quite a few die in the shop, as well as some customers coming back in to say theirs had died too. In fact he was surprised that I had no issues with mine! Tempting fate or what? I take some comfort from that though, knowing it wasn't all my fault with a new tank.....

Good news is I have around 15 platy fry in the tank at the last count. They are much bigger now, growing by the day :)

Thanks for the help and advice everyone!! :good:

Great to see you've done well KAISER, sorry to hear about the panda but like you said you tried your best and it wasn't your fault :)

Best of luck with the fry. Would love to see some pics :good:

Looking forward to seeing their colour :) and I still cant figure out who the mother is!! lol

I was told by my LFS that Panda corys tend to have a high mortality rate if they've been captive bred. He said he prefers to get wild caught pandas... I do question whether its the best method of obtaining them over fishing etc.

I personally think I would rather have captive bred fish rather than wild caught so as to not create a demand for them overseas, the only time I'd entertain the idea of wild caught is if I was to be breeding a certain fish that are hard to come by, thus removing the need for further wild caught fish....unfortunately a lot of the time the LFS doesn't know how the fish were obtained...:(

Well, you guys are making me even more determined to get in touch with the cory expert guy I know of (don't know if you saw me reference that in twinkle's thread) .. but he hasn't called back so I'll have to try to dig up his email.. Its just made me more curious about what anybody knows about the more detailed nature of the panda sensitivities. WD
