hello please could someone give me soma advice please.i bought a juwel tank off ebay last night and when i went to collect it was all packed ready for collection so today i decided to have a look at trying to set it up.it has the normal juwel internal filter but has no lid am i able to use it without it? also it came with a rio 2100 power head but i have no instructions for it could someone please tell me where in the tank to place the power head as i have never used one before.it also came with a skimmer but i am not going to use that as i am setting us a freshwater tank.any advice most welcome and thank you for reading my post.

not too sure about those tanks. but my tank doesnt have a lid and works fine. are you starting a tropical tank or cold water?

With winter coming on, you will at least want a cover for the tank to keep the evaporation rates down. My one tropical without a good lid loses a tremendous amount of water during the heating season.

I like the fairly plain hinged glass covers that have a plastic skirt the back which you can cut to customize the openings for your filter hoses and electrical lines. They to depend on the upper rim of the tank having a little protruding rim however.

the tank has a lid but the juwel box filter does not have a lid so can i still use it thanks

pics of the filter?
if its a box filter, it really doesnt need a lid. but if its a powered internal filter, it will need to be sealed. it depends on what filter you have.
also, the powerhead could have been used to fun the filter (assuming its a regular box filter) instead of an airline. if you are not going to use it for this purpose, you can really place it anywhere you want. usually they are placed near the surface to help aerate the waer, but if you have another filter breaking the waters surface, you can place it at any level in the tank. just remember, the lower you place it in the tank, the more of a chance it may pick up substrate.

yes it is a box filter.thank you for your replys.i will mow try to set it up fingers crossed it works than you all

I've got a jewel tank with the internal filter and you don't need the lid to use it, its only a poorly fitted bit of plastic that just sits on top anyway. You might want to try and make something to cover it though as fish will get inside, I've had it happen twice when cleaning the filter and the lid is off, once fish get in there it is extremely difficult to get them out again. You could try getting a cheap condensation tray and cutting it so that it just sits on top of the box. I'm not great at DIY so hopefully someone will come along with a better idea lol.

You dont really need the lid. Before I took the internal filter out of my Juwel Rio 125, I had a fish managed to get into the filter even with the lid on (The lid has a small round hole in it)

When the tank is filled to the 'max fill' line the water level sits about a centremetre below the top of the filter housing box, if you are worried or have any problems with fish getting into the filter unit, just fill the tank a little less, about 1-2 cm below the max fill line.
