I have had a disaster changing the water in my tank today. My heater smashed. This was my first water change (I'm new to this, and have only had fish in the tank for one week now). I know exactly what I did wrong, and I won't make the same mistake again. But for now, I need advice on what to do.
I've wrapped the tank in tinfoil to try and keep the heat in. It's about 100 litres so I don't think it will hold the heat too well.

If by some miracle anyone reading this lives in the north of england and has a spare heater I could buy (tonight), it would be much appreciated.

When I get to a shop tomorrow I will be buying 3 heaters, each of half the wattage of the single heater that has been running in my tank. I'll use 2 of them to run the tank, and keep the third as a backup in case 1 of the other two fails.

Thanks in advance,

Stuart

(I also posted this in one of the other forum's as I didn't know where best to post it and it is quite urgent I think).

Wack your house heating up a bit to minimalise losses until you can sort it, if you do find someone who can help near you you might want to do smallish waterchanges with warm dechlorinated water every so often to keep the temp stable ish.

GOOD LUCK!!!

oh, i guess in the UK they have that law, huh? i also didn't realize what time it was over there, sorry.

What about taking a jugful of water out of the tank every so often and microwaving it to heat it up, before poring it back into the sump at the back of the tank? Would that cause a problem?

You could float a hot water bottle in it

Hopefully if you keep the room heating on & your lights you should be fine

Probably Lancashire is too far then as I have the spare I use for heating water for water changes.

Thanks anyway. I've got my lights on with tinfoil around the tank - I've just thought - it must be awfully bright in there - will it damage my soft coral?

Do you have halides - if so I wouldn't worry to much about the heater

Has the temperature dropped much?

leave heating on overnight, cover the tank, drape a blanket around it. Dont go using warm tap water if you have corals.

get a bottle of hot water and float it in the water for a while; it might bump temp up a bit, i done it initially! :good:
