I need some pointers please. On Sunday I bought 4 redline torpedo barbs and popped them in the quarrantine tank. I noticed straight away that one of the fishes tails was partially missing. I assumed it had been nipped as there didn't appear to be any other problems. On tuesday I noticed that was more of the tail gone and it was starting to look a little opaque so I suspected fin rot. I don't have a second spare tank so as they others were fine and actually a lot more active than this little guy I put them in the main tank (and crossed my fingers) so I could treat the quarrantine tank. So last night I treated with a dose of Interpet No8 anti fungus and fin rot.

This morning I noticed that yet more of the tail was gone and there was a white fuz over it. By tonight the fuz is worse and it's like cotton wool which is starting to cover the base of his tail. Is this what fin rot does? Is it something else? If it is fin rot does it normally progress this quickly - it seems to be getting worse by the hour. I can't treat with anything else now for 7 days I understand?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. For information, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 5, pH 7.6.

I'm keeping a close eye on the others and they are still fine

Cheers

Angela

The anti fungus and finrot med not that good.
Myxazin by waterlife a better med.

Give the med time to work.

If the other is no good would I be better doing a complete water change and then use Myxazin, or should I now wait the 7 days?

I would finish the course of the med now.
If he still alive and there not much improvement after 5 days, preform a water change and run some black carbon for aday.
Then add the myxazin med.

OK, will do. Thanks. I get some Myxazin the in the meantime

Ok.
Good luck.
Let us all know how he gets on bless him.

Thanks, I'll keep you posted.

I should have looked at the bag before I brought them home - I'll know better next time. And I bought from this shop even though they cost a little more because the other shop most had sunken bellies and didn't look at all right!

Sunken in belly is a bad sign so you did the right thing. It can mean fish tb, bacterial, internal parasites, or the fish is being starved.

Update

Today's update. I got home and most of the cotton wool had gone apart from one little strand. The cotton wool has gone and so has his tail. There is no fuz on the stump, but it is a little pink. Have said that he seems to have perked up a little. Lets hope it's not a last flourish before the end.

Fingers crossed.

I've done a water change and am running a carbon filter for 48 hours as I now have some Myxazin. I also have some pimafix, when I dose with myxazin should I dose with pimafix as well?

Pink is bacterial.
Yes try the myxazin. Don't need to add pimafix.
Good Luck.

I saw on the bottle that it says "add once a day for 2 days when adding new fish". Is this good to use a routine in a quarantine tank for new fish?

Just wondering for future reference

Not really.
Best to quarantine new fish for up to 4 weeks.
Don't use meds they build a resistance up to them. So they won't work when there needed.

That's very logical. Thanks

My boy is still looking ok, I'm going to start the Myxazin this evening as he's had 28 hours clear of meds. Not eating, but it's too early to worry.

I presume there is a chance his tail wont grow back as it's down to the stump. If it is going to grow again how quickly will I know?

It should grow back but it will take time.
Usually by the time its a stump the fish rarely makes it.

Soak his food in garlic juice to stimulate appetite and boost the immune system.
