Hi all, somewhat new to the fish-keeping hobby, it was something that sort of creeped up on me out of the blue and I didn't realise I was a fish-hobbyist until I'd left the pet store having spent a good chunk of change on just two fish.

I started with having the average goldfish, several others and a black moor that went gold. Progressed to half tropical half not before just recently (as of two weeks ago) have gone full tropical.

I've already made some poor choices (with some horrible advice from the local petstore), a large majority of smaller fish have been eaten... actually ALL my smaller fish have been eaten and am now housing 2 cat fish, one red-jewel cichlid and one blue acara cichlid (this appears to be another poor choice as the blue is being somewhat tormented by the red and will be returning to the pet-store, it seems to have taken-up the defense tactic of "laying-motionless-at-the-top-of-the-tank-to-appear-dead-and-cause-me-to-freak-out-several-times-a-day").

So just saying hi and I hope to be wonderfully annoying with my very, very newbish questions I will no doubt have in the upcoming months :D

Hello and welcome to the forum.... you'll find a lot of knowledgeable persons on here all ready to answer your every question...... enjoy your stay.

:hi:

I'd take the jewel cichlid back if you can, decab.

The are one of the most aggressive fish in the world, IME, and invariably end up having to be kept as a single specimen. He might be leaving the catfish alone atm, but there's no doubt in my mind that as soon as the acara has gone, he'll turn on the them....

What kind of catfish are they, btw? As there are literally thousands of species, some eminently suitable for tanks, and many others categorically not.
