First I have to say I have enjoyed your forum.  I stumbled across it when looking for information an a Betta for my son.
Then I started checking things out, and got the itch to set up an aquarium again.

We had one for about 10 years, but packed it up about 8  years ago.
I am happy to say that we are picking up a 35 gallon set up today that we saw for sale.  We have been told it comes with everything except water and fish.  So later today, I will be busy, and am getting really exicted.

In the past we had tropic fish.  Angel fish that lived to be 10 years, and got as big as my hand.  Loved that fish.  A lot of guppies, mollies, etc.  Kids loved the live babies, and we actually had a little "Nursery" tank set up complete with pink and blue gravel, and baby decorations.

I think I will be starting with tropical again, as I had a lot of luck with them.  I had thought about cichlids, but I enjoy those at work everyday, in a 90 gallon tank outside my office door.

I am off to do some more reading, especially about setting up a new tank, and gazing at pictures of all the beautiful tanks.

:hi: to the forum, Sherry.

Welcome to the forums! Make sure you read up on the most important aspect of a new tank (Other than the fish :p ) Cycling. How to and why can be found HERE

I cant wait to see it :D

Thanks for the welcome.
Yes I have read, and re-read about cycling.  Something I was unaware of so many years ago, but glad I am now.
Will wait to see what the new setup comes with, as far as supplies, and then will start my list and probably hit the pet store tomorrow after work, to get everything I need to start the cycle process.

Will be hard to wait to put fish in, but I want to do things right, and give them a good start.
Getting really excited!

If you're going to be headed to a pet store to get more supplies, ask if they will give you some of their filter media, that will help jump start your cycle.
Also, if you are going to try a fishless cycle be sure to get a test kit, preferably a liquid one, but I'm sure you already read about that.
I'm from southern Ontario as well, so if you need any advice on where to get things just ask me :) (I had a bugger of a time trying to find straight, unscented ammonia, and wouldn't you know, Walmart sells it)

Glad to know I can find the ammonia at Walmart.  I had a feeling that was going to be my biggest challenge.

I live near a Paulmac's Pet Store and a new Petsmart that just opening this year.  And I am about a half hour from Big Al's.  Do you have any suggestions on the best place for fish and supplies?

Depends what you're looking for, Big Al's tends to have the best selection in both stock and products, but their pretty pricey. I spent 65$ on a LED Light strip that was on sale, and the next week I found it at pet smart for 55$ normal price. Big Al's is also the only place I've found that will trade stock, but their policy isn't very good, you need to bring a lot of stuff to get anything decent in return. So for simple things like fish flakes and filter cartridge then go to Petsmart or even Walmart. If you're looking for interesting fish, a plant supporting substrate (Or you want a better selection on any given item really, then go to Big Al's)

Also, depending on where you are in Southern Ontario look up the local aquarium society. The society I belong to (Hamilton and District)  is having an auction next weekend and you can get just about anything super cheap at these auctions; especially live plants and fish.

to TFF! Hope you enjoy it here.

Glad to know you'll be doing a fishless cycle. HERE are some ammonia sources, in case you can't find the one at wal-mart.

Looking forward to seeing your tank progress!

Well I got really lucky with the set up we found.  Got a 35 gallon, with stand, and everything needed.  Just need to get the stuff for the cycle tomorrow, and the inserts for the filter.  We scrubbed everything really good and have set everything up, and filled with water for today.

There are several very large colourful rocks, that were black from algae, that my son scrubbed with a brush, and they look brand new.  When we first saw them, I never would have thought they would look so colourful under all that black gunk.  Washed all the gravel as well, as it was pretty dirty.  But the tank was just taken down last week from the person we bought it from, so still being wet, it was easy to clean.

Getty really excited to get back into this hobby.  Thanks for all the suggestions.  Looking forward to learning more here.

Hi and welcome from a neighbour frenchie ;)
