Hello! Beginner Here!

Thank you Byron, tank has been emptied and cleaned including filter and gravel.
Going to start cycling tomorrow once I have picked up some ammonia.
And going to start looking at what fish might be suitable, we dont really have space for a bigger tank (main problem being a lively 10month old so we cant have it on a stand anywhere, its on the dining table).
 
Our water here is hard, my water company reports it as being 270CaCO3mg/l and the PH is about 7.5.  Interested to hear any recommendations.

I am interested in having a solitary betta but I am still a bit unsure of the tank preparation for that.  I have read the care sheet and understand the tank does not have to be cycled but that ammonia and nitrate still has to be 0?  So what do I need to do to prepare the tank for a betta?
