Hi All, i have been browsing this site for a while now and been taking alot of advice quite alot of members have on here. I have been keeping fish for a few years on and off due to house movements, but have finally settled and currently have a 6.5 Ft x 1.5 Ft x 2 Ft Freshwater Tank. The tank has been running for about 6 months fully cycled. Been slowly stocking up. It currently has 2 300w heaters, and air pump, and an Ehiem 2080 filter. I know some members would say to have 2 filters but with current stock levels i am sure the one is fine.

The inhabitants of the tank currently are:

4 x Golden Danio's
3 x Amano Shrimp
1 x Red Cherry Shrimp (Hitch Hiker)
2 x Golden Algae Eaters
6 x Clown Loaches
9 x Kuhli Loaches
8 x Neon Tetra

As you can see, most of these fish are bottom Level fish. So i am after advice for fish that would be mid / top level fish that would go with my current stocking of communtiy fish. The Algae eaters i am aware can become aggresive when bigger and were bought due to a massive brown algae bloom. I did have a golden nugget but sadly it died and didnt want to risk another plec straight away. Since reading that golden nuggets dont normally last long in homes for some reason. I would prob move them on as a friend of mine owns his own fish shop.

I have been fond of BGK and Reedfish but after extensive research they would eat some of my other fish.

Will get photos of my tank for you to see. Also parameters are:

Ammonia : 0
Nitrite : 0
Nitrate : 5

Ph and Kh will update.

There are a load of plants, 2 drift woods and caves made from rocks. The substrate is sand.

Finally hello again, and look forward to advice on future stocking levels.

Raf

Sounds fantastic mate! :) I would be tempted by a group of 6-8 juvenile Angels. If your Neons are suitably adult sized then they should be fine, and if the Angels grow up with them then they probably won't see them as food.

Your Golden Sucking Loaches can indeed be very aggressive when adult, but are great looking fish. Such a shame. I would replace them with 3 Albino Bristlenoses. The brown algae you describe was probably a diatom outbreak. Something which can be prolific if not sorted out. Usually affects new tanks as the balance finds a level, but too much light can also cause an outbreak even in a mature tank.

Would love to see some pics of your tank, get some up and make a thread in the members aquariums section.

Welcome to the forum too! :)

Thanks Minnnt, the Neons are adult size ish, have had them the longest. Did have a smaller tank before I found my current one and they were kept in there. The brown algae bloom was demolished by the algae eaters. They are a fair size now, I will be keeping them for now, but if they start to stress out the other fish will have to move them on. I think the algae was more to do with new tank finding its balance then too much light.

Will start to research the angels, but any other species I could start to look at. Might get some more different tetra's. At the moment the tank is in a room thats set as a living room, but with recent news of a second baby on the way. We have decided to changed the room into a play room. So wouldnt mind if possible a colourful tank for the babies to enjoy as much as me.

Will start a project topic, as there is alot of work to do with the tank setup. Even though its been running for a while.

I'd up your shoal of neons, as they do much beter and look more impressive in larger groups. Or you could think about Congo tetras; lovely fish that have nearly all the colours of the rainbow on them, and grow quite big, so are great for kids to look at :)

Congo tetras, columbian tetras, buenos aires tetras, rosey tetras, serpae tetras, head and tail light tetras, silver tip tetras, black ruby barbs, cherry barbs, tiger barbs, pentazona barbs, all colourful fish and you could keep them very happy by keeping them in a massive shoal.

cheers for the list of fish. will start researchig them, and learning all the ninfo about them before i go ahead and buy any.

is there any chance of any oddball fish out there i can also look at keeping.

really do like the Black Ghost Knife fish and Reedfish. But after researching them online, they would eat or stress iut my current stock.

whats peoples thoughts on Scissors Tales / Bala Shark / Silver shark (I presume the are all the same just called different)??

Welcome, Raf485... Terry here from sunny Port Talbot :hey:

Would you mind me asking what fish store you use in the Swansea area? The only 3 decent ones i have found are Maidenhead (Llansamlett and Clydach, respectively) and the local, family run business in Skewen (Fish 'n' Things)..

I use Pets At Home for my conditioners, food, etc.. but don't trust them with fish...

regards,

Terry.

Hi Terry,

I use Aquatic Supplies Wales in Fforestfach. Its on the Queensways. One of my school mates owns it. Although I still use 2 internet sites to order other stuff, but go to him for fish. I do visit Maidenhead in Llansamlet as well. Recently bougt plants from there, as my mate didnt have many. So far all the fish I have bought off him are healthy. On my last vist he did have some Clown Loaches with an Ich problem, if thats how he got them I cant comment though.
