What size heater do I need for a 120 litre tank - I'm using the one that came with my second had tank at the moment as while my temperature never drops below 23, which is fine for my current fish, I can turn it up to 26+ and it still seems to not get hotter than 23.

I think an upgrade may be in order.

ive got a 300 watt heater on my 180 litre tank and no heating in my bedroom. when it was below freezing the lowest the temp got to was 23. there are guidelines as to what heater to use in accordance to your tank, but if you feel your tank room can get very cold sometimes, then go for the next size up.

They room we have the tank in is reasonably warm and therefore I definitely don't think we would need to size up - what are these guidelines for heater size?

it can vary. the brand of heater you use. will have its own guidlines. check the brand and model you have then compare it on the website ect.

so you may have a similar heater at 100 watts for exapmle which is just out of range for your size tank

if money isnt really too important to you on thisd item then id reccomend one of these heaters

prices may vary

The general rule is you want a minimum of 1 watt per litre. Heater wattages tend to come in round numbers so you'd be wanting a 150W heater minimum. A 150W heater should have no problems maintaining the temperature at whatever you choose to set it at. If you're particularly worried about it, go for a 200W.

As a side note, those false julii cories you're planning on getting won't appreciate it if you turn the heat up to 26+. Great choice of fish though. :)
