Hey
I was just wondering what kind of fish would you recommend for a 20 and a 40 gallon long fish tank? Also would you recommend sand or gravel?Which is easier to clean? Also how long does it take to cycle a tank and what do I have to do?

Thanks a lot
Nick

For things like cycling and the gravel v sand there are a lot of topics on these already. If you use the search funtion then you should be able to find a lot of information that way.

In my opinion though I prefer sand over gravel.

this link will help you out,

i have both sand and gravel tanks and i couldnt really choose cos i like them both! Sands probably easier to clean because you can see when its dirty and the poop and uneaten fish food is jus sitting on the top ready to be gravel vac'd.

as for fish....

20G probably a pair of rams and a small group of tetras and cories.

40G i think gouramis are a nice center piece fish so maybe get some of them. theres a few types and there all really nice coloured.

There are so many types of fish out there it is hard to recomend type of fish. I have no clue as to what type of fish you like or find interesting. Go to your LPS, look at the fish and see what catch your eye. Come back here, post that list, and we can help you find tankmates and with issues like stocking levels.

hmm fish that catch my eye are:

Dwarf Rams
Cardinal Tetras
Flame Tetra
apistogramma borelli
Bloodfin tetras
blue rams
Dwarf Puffer Fish
rasboras
cherry barbs
Serpae Tetra
Mindouli Killie
Southern Platy
Spotted Climbing Perch

i picked no catfish ther are too many so tell me a name of a catfish and i'll tell you if i like it

Since you don't seem to be getting a reply, I'm sure you can use google and/or the fish index here to research the fish in your list to see if they are suitable for your tanks.

Aw, I'm sorry. Let's talk about catfish then.

In the 20 gallon you should probably stick to something that does not produce a huge amount of waste.

Everybody likes corys! They do not eat algae, but they do eat leftovers while they're fresh. Also like catfish tablets, and love live foods. They need to be in schools of at least 3 individuals (of the same kind). They are very peaceful, sociable creatures, great fun to watch. They need somewhere to hide, like a cave or a piece of wood. Common hardy corys are bronze corys (including albinos) and peppered corys, but there are many more on the market. The panda corys have a reputation for being sensitive. Bronzes and peppereds can grow up to 3 inches, most other kinds stay at about 2 inches.

Otos are good algae cleaners, but can be sensitive when first acquired, should only go in a mature tank. Make sure the ones you buy have a full tummy and dont look thin.

For the 40 gal you might want to look at a larger school of the above or a small pleco or ancistrus.

The bristlenose plec (ancistrus) is peaceful and hardy. Eats algae and greens, but also fish food. Males have the most amazing bristles over their noses.

There are small species of plecs out there, such as the clown plec (said to be quite shy) and quite a few others. Make sure you do not buy a common plec or a sailfin though, as neither can fit in a 40 gallon.

If you want to get more replies to your posts you need to think more carefully about what you put down as your question in the first place. Think about it as carefully as you would about your ebay product title. If it doesn't tickle anyone's fancy, and to be honest 'Having trouble picking' didn't particularly leap out at me, you'll find that a lot of the more experienced members pass you by. They're not being arrogent or feel that you are beneath them replying to it's just that most of them probably havn't even read your post.

Put down something intriguing or funny etc. as your post title and then when people are scanning down deciding what to look at they will be more inclined to look at it, often just out of curiousity. Can't guarantee they'll write anything back mind :D but hey it's a start. e.g. I wanted to know what this big plant was that had started growing really quickly in my tank. Instead of putting 'What's this plant' (a bit dull), I put 'Why is there a giant beanstalk growing in my tank' and underneath put 'Didn't remember planting magic beans.' Got about 5 replies within a day and I'm only a newbie aswell. Hope that helps

ps Dont start putting 'NAKED LADIES HERE' as your post title as Ive seen people do in other forums. Gets lots of interest but everyone thinks you're an idiot :)
