Went out looking for big mother plants for my tank as my Java Fern is looking a little limp and came back with this

SAM_0155.jpg

Massive piece of wood and it was only £13  And it was from a nice surprise find shop as well, went to the planted tank in Selby looking for plants (a little disappointed to be honest but it is what it is) and found an other shop round the corner called Ranchu Aquatics which I had vaguely heard of but was pleasantly surprised with a nice healthy shop with a couple of nice rarities! I could have happily brought home quite a few of the fish he had in but decided against it.

Quite a fun day all in all, drove past a really run down shop in the middle of no where and found a 12 inch Clown Knife Fish I felt bad for it but couldnt do anything :( One day might go back and see if its still stuck there though.

But yeah I had to share this bargain!! In this area the same bit would cost at least £50

that's a nice lump of wood! A yes, a proper bargain :good:

Nice find, that looks a lumpy/heavy bit of wood for £13!:good:

Got it in soak now but seems not to be leaching much at all. Going to give it a scrub this evening and possibly order some plants after Ian in the planted section helped me out a bit with an ID :) Need to get some little pots though as well as I think their roots might get disturbed too much at the moment.

I went to the planted tank in selby, got some ferts, plants & some fish about a week ago. I think I will give Ranchu aquatics a visit some time, I had a look at their website and they look quite good. Do you know of any other good aquatics shops in the area? I mainly use Maidenhead Aquatics in york.
I was also thinking about having a look at Paws for thought in Leeds.

Ranchu is worth a look he had some nice fish in mainly bigger ones though not sure what your set up is like. Im from Hull and often travel around for good shops my top two are Wharf in Nottinham (not exactly close but worth the travel) and Just Fish in S#37###horpe is good. Maidenheads are always reasonably good but depends what your after. Ive not tried any Leeds shop really apart from the Living World (though I think its changed names) but they have a terrible reputation for care and quality but when I have been there have been some great fish but in fairness looking a little peeky at best... Tingly Tropicals is meant to be good.

The one I should be able to recommend whole heartedly is Ferrybridge Aquatics as they have amazing stock and the owner and his son have great advice but never buy fish from them if you can not QT them properly.

For me this area of the country, which is a pretty big area just has no great fish shops they are either nice, clean and healthy and full of dull fish or have interesting fish for sale but either filthy and questionable or outright disease ridden... and worse still is when its full of dull fish that are in dirty tanks and full of diseases.

Depending on where you are for me it would be worth a trip to Manchester if your after great shops there are loads in and around that area.

If anyone knows any other good ones though let me know :D

over here on the north side of gods own county we don't do too badly for good fish stores.

The ones I mainly use are :

Harrogate Aquatics based at Moorlands garden centre on Forest Moor Road,Knaresborough - if they havn't got something your looking for they will try to get it for you. Tanks are always spotless, never seen diseased fish or dead ones in tanks and the staff are nice and friendly once they get to know you. Some good knowledge aswell.

Stephen H Smiths at Otley. Not much choice in all honesty on tropicals but they've got some nice marine fish. The majority of my cories have come from there and all have been healthy. Reasonably priced, friendly staff, one with very good knowledge and very clean.

Cascade based on the main A road into Ripon. I've had fish from there but had a bad experience with a cory and havn't been back since. They have a good selection of tanks and accessories and they staff know their stuff. It's very clean and tidy.

I've also been to Maidenhead Aquatics at Poppleton (the York one you mention) and I love the place. The choice is amazing, the tanks are clean, there's a great choice on plants. I've not got any fish there yet though as I'm fully stocked at the moment.

Hope that helps others reading this that live in Yorkshire :)
