Title and sub title says it all really, I have a demi-john I could have used, but bow to your superior aquatic plant knowledge :p Just wondering if I could have got a similar (though probably not as good) effect from a demi-john, bung and pipe....) Thanks guys!

The quick answer to that is ............. Yes !

You can even make up a DIY system using old 2ltr pop bottles.

I used to use the hagen/nutrafin system simply becuase the diffuser was pretty good for a yeast based system.
However having seen these Sprio Infinity diffusers over on AquaEssentials site, I'd much prefer one of those ... they look far better and take up
less room, and they are designed for yeast based systems (Pity I no longer use yeast for my Co2).

You can also use small glass/ceramic diffusers, however I found that whilst they were fine to start with as soon as the yeast co2 production slowed down they worked less well.

Thanks Mr G :>

I figured so... hmmm even though i have one on order... I may make up a temporary one as an experiment, what would you recommend as a difuser, and should it be above or below the tank?

It's easy enough to do as long as you ensure you have a good seal.
The Nutrafin units are still good though and usually look tidier than home made units.
I'd strongly advise including a small non return valve in your airline to prevent any syphoning action.
Note: These are also worth adding the the Nutrafin kits as they dont come with one (of didn't last time I bought one)

For extra peace of mind you may also want to use a smaller pop bottle as an expansion bottle.
These stop any of the yeast mix getting into the tank if you get a large fermentation burst.
They also have the added benefit of trapping most of the gray gunk that normally develops on your diffuser with yeast based systems.

As for a diffuser, I always found the Nutrafin one pretty good, but have recently seen these Spio Infinity Diffusers at Aquaessentials that look like they'd perform pretty well but take up less space in the tank.
However I've got no experience of them as I no longer use yeast based CO2 in my tanks.

You can also use small glass/ceramic diffusers, but I found that they work less well as the yeast production of Co2 starts to level off.
