That looks like a pangasius catfish to me, I inherited one years back when I didn't know what it was, they really shouldn't be sold in LFS's as they get enormous! If it is you may have to donate to your local aquarium :(

If that ID is correct, then they can get to around 4 foot I think ...

Definitely not Pangasius. It looks like Ageneiosus marmoratus, or maybe (but less likely) Ageneiosus polystictus?
This fish needs a big tank with lots of space, but also bogwood and plants to provide cover. If it's A.marmoratus, it's about 12" at adult, if A.polystictus, then nearer 18". Can I ask where it came from and what do you have it mxed with? Should take prepared foods, don't try live feeders unless it will not eat anything. Do you know if it's wild caught or come from another fishkeeper? Is that coral sand? If so, this fish won't last long in these conditions, it's from south america, and so needs very different conditions from what a tank of coral sand will give.

p.s. If you only paid £40, you got a bargain!

I take it you own a Public aquarium?
if not, you will need one soon.:hyper:

Why?
My post above states that maximum size for this Ageneiousus is 18" (but realistically 12" as I think it's almost definitely A.marmoratus), so although it will need a big aquarium, it won't need anything like that of a public aquarium.

I'm not convinced of the ID. plus do you have a 6 foot tank?

I'd put money on it being an Ageneiosus, and as it's not my fish, it doesn't matter what size tank I have.
Compare this:

to this:

and tell me you still thik it's a pangasius.

dont get me wrong. i'm not saying you aint got it right.
I'm just unsure.
the comment was meant light heartedly.
a 6 foot tanks are very big by hobby standards.
if its kept with any other fish, they need to be too big to eat.
though hobby information is sketchy. many fish like this benefit from company.
this all adds up to a BIG tank requirement.

OK, sorry, I must have had a SOH bypass today.

Yes, agreed, it needs to be kept with suitable sized tankmates and probably, as you say big tank, I'd say a 4x2x2 minimum, but more realistically a 6x2x2. I think the OP needs to rethink the tank already as it's obvious that it's a coral sand base and rock, somehting this fish will not do well with long term. Soft, just below neutral and lots of boggwood and plants for cover, with a large swimming space.

+1 on a Ageneiosus species,

The markings don't match, face is too stretched and fins not extend enough to be Pangasius

Agreed, def not a pangasius! Have seen A.Marmoratus on availability lists occasionally too.

Nice to see an interesting species! Fully expcted it to be a syno or pangasius! LOL :good:

Hopefully "Wills" will pop into this thread (his PMs are still not functional as far as I'm aware), as he has had two Ageneiosus for about six months now, his love current surfing in front of the filter outputs of his (6x2x2?).
