To cut long story short the front of my tank got scratched so I decided to turn it round. So I got it emptied and took the back round off to give the tank a clean, turned it round and put everything back in it but when it dried I was left with white stains on glass. Googled it and found it was hard water stains. What can shift this, I've tried vinegar, bleach, commercial cleaners(not all at once) and scraping it with a razor blade. Anyone know how to shift it. The wife can't really notice it but its buggin the #105### outa me.

I usually just use one of those algae scrapers wit the razor blade for those hardcore water marks, they are a #29### to get off! I manage eventually though

If I run my thumbnail across it I can feel it but when I take the razor to it nothing comes off. Need to do something, the wife hit the roof after a small chemical reaction left the house stinkin.

Is white spirits a good or bad idea, the marks are nowhere near the lip of the tank so no chance of any getting in the water.

Don't use white spirits, the liquid film can disperse quite far from where you apply and it won't be good for sealant if it gets near it.

I've tried everything you have and what's leftover have removed by soaking vinegar onto paper towels and lying it over the mark overnight.

I have heard some people using hydrochloric acid but not done so myself

I've found "kill rock" lime scale remover does the job, but follow the instuctions and rinse well afterwards !

Any chance that is available in tescos?

Point taken about the white spirits, just getting desperate. Done the paper towel and vinegar thing but only soaked it for 3 hours. Love your tank.

Sorry don't know, I get it from a local hardware shop. I think somewhere like B&Q would have it in the plumbing section as it can be used for clearing radiators and pipes in central heating systems.

Edit...It's Hydrochloric acid.

Anytime...I apply it neat with a bit of sponge, you will need rubber gloves, eye protection and LOTS of ventilation.
It's very potent and will work immediately.
Its actually called "Kill Roc" and will descale your kettle a treat too.

Cut a lemon in half, and rub the juicy part on the glass. Then rinse it with bottled/distilled water and dry it with a towel.

Sounds dangerous, I can't even be trusted with bleach and vinegar. I'll nip into homebase 2moro.
