Hagen Test Kit

hi everyone,

I was at a sale at my lfs today and picked up some hagen test kit refills. thinking i could find the directions and charts from someone..if it works i probably saved about $15

i just got home and posted this..just thought to try a google search..but acclimating fish, setting things up..busy busy busy. also just hoping to hear any information about the tests from people who might have a full kit..to make sure i got all the necessary chemicals...s**t, i forgot test tubes....

oh, i already have an API master test kit...but it is with me for half the year while i am at school, and i want one from home. if anyone knows if the color charts are the same that would help too.

What kind of Hagen test kit? You should probably post pics so people know exactly what you are talking about though...

I have the Hagen KH and GH test kit.

If it's just refills you bought (didn't even know you could get them for test kits any more), then you aren't going to have much luck with the accuracy of results, because if the colour cards (charts?) aren't included, people posting pictures of them isnt going to be useful (due to people using different white balance settings, cameras having different white balance settings, and printers/screens representing colours differently).

i was thinking a scanner would do it alright..just so i can get a good estimate..even with the cards i have for my api kit i can hardly match some of the colors..

you mean what elements does it test? i didn't know there was more than one type of test kit?..i pretty much grabbed one of everything, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, high ph, GH (i think..i'm at the library now stupid laptop cord broke, the tests are in my room, i think it said carbonate hardness..i'm not sure)

if you would have time to send me those i would really appreciate it...i might just try and make some of them up sort of haha. i know my tank has 0 ammonia 0 nitrite typically...hmm i don't think i have instructions as to amount of drops though..crap i guess this was just a stupid idea haha. i just hate to spend $20 on a kit when i already have the API one, just need two cause of diff. locations.

any suggestions anyone?

i would but i'm just a broke college student trying to cut corners..i was hoping they would be the same as my API test kit cards, but haven't found out anything about it yet.

Nope, without cards your pretty much out of options...

I'll take a pic of the instructions for my kit and post it here if you want, but it's really a waste of time...

If you can take a pic with a grey card then the op will have better luck getting a natural colour balance but it must be grey, ideally a photographic card, which I appreciate you will possibly not have!

Interesting, I don't have one, but it sounds useful if that works, how does it work?

Would it not be a waste of time because of how bright or dark it is? (which is important with test kits, the difference between light and dark red).

Or do you mean the OP would also have to have the same card so the colours could be matched?

Yeah, the OP would also need one lol. The other way is to find someone who has had their white balance set correctly using a screen cam (like me) and who also has the test kit (not like me lol) and get them to scan and post images but that would also rely on you having had our screen graphically set to "correct" (which most laptop and cheap desktop monitors can't do)

So your only going to be able to get an estimate, sorry.

well..if it matters..my tank is already set up and stuff, i have pretty hardy fish, i'm not really worried about my levels..so estimating would be fine by me..i could also do that till i am home again, then i could use my api test kit to test water, and compare it to the hagen results, and "calibrate" it off that.

if you feel like doing it i'd appreciate it..if not really, then ok, i'll just take them back if i can't find anything else
