Habitat For Different Fish

im going to soon be looking for some fish to put in my tank, i know that certain fish dont get along, but do i have to have any special colors or types of vegatation for certain types of fish, this is going to be a freshwater tank with all fake vegatation, im looking for a fish that resembles a saltwater fish, somethign colorfull. how should i set my tank up and what kinda fish should i start out with?
