Green Barb Dead, Ph Crashed To 6.0

Got home from work today to find one of my Green Barbs dead. I immediately did a 50% water change (from reading countless posts here) and saved some water to test. After the change I tested the old water. The pH was 6.0 before the change and now it's 7.6! I never would have suspected I would see a pH crash test result. Have I signed my tank's death certificate by raising the pH too much too fast? Is there anything I can do?

It's unlikely you'll see anything bad happen. The effects of pH are generally very over-rated; I've had tanks crash to 5 and not lost fish (my water's very soft).

I don't know why you lost your barb, but I doubt it was the pH.

Parameters from old water were Ammonia 0,(Salifert quality test), Nitrite 0, Nitrate 0, (API junk test kit), temp 76F. pH was the only bizarre reading. Thanks for super fast reply fluttermoth! You made my day again!

lol, you're welcome. your stats are fine, so it could just be one of those things; it seems to be tiger spawning season atm, so it could have been killed by the other tigers; they do sometimes get very rough with each other

Now one of my other Green Barbs is swimming up to the top of the tank in a nose up posture, then dropping back down, what does this mean?!

Do you have any idea as to why the pH dropped? Is your water really soft?
