I currently have 4 batches of guppy fry at different ages. I have noticed in batches 1 and 2 that there seems to be an almost paper-thin line (sort of charcoal in color) appearing on the backside of some of them... is this the beginnings of the gravid spot?

Please learn from those of us who have suffered through watching gravid spots and believing old wives tales. They are almost totally meaningless. A fish that is eating well will darken up in that area.

I am unfamiliar with any old wives tales about sexing guppies. LOL I am just wondering if that is the beginning of being able to tell if they are male or female.

It isn't! The so-called' gravid spot' is normally just the fish's gut and stomach filling with food!

... then how do you tell males from females?

Here is a picture of one I was thinking must be a female...

Adult males don't have gravid spots... so why wouldn't it be the same for babies once they reach a sexable age?

The only real way to sex them is to wait for the male's gonopodium to become apparent after a couple of months.
