gravel to sand?

does any1 have any advise on the change from gravel to sand? is there anything i have to watch for? if i remove all my gravel will i lose my beneficial bacteria? how long do i have to wait 2 put my fish in from the cloudyness? do i have 2 empty the entire tank of water?
