hi, i have a fluval edge tank. i have bought a large tub of carbon and biomax for the filter instead of buying refill kits (save some £££ in long run). i have found a site that does aquatic foam but im unsure of what grade to buy for my filter... options are 10 ppi 20 ppi 30 ppi 45 ppi.

if anyone could help that would be great.

i just found it strange that fluval sell bulk carbon and biomax but not foam!!!!

The fluval edge uses a hagen aquaclear filter (without the labeling), right?

I don't really have the answer you're looking for, but...

You can just buy one foam insert and one biomax insert and reuse the same ones over and over. That is more economical than anything else. I've had the same sponge and biomax in my filter for at least a year. You don't need to replace the foam or the biomax, just squeeze and rinse with old tank water. I don't even bother with carbon unless I have to take out medications, I just keep an extra sponge in it's place.

They just tell you to replace the stuff every month or two with new so that they'll make more money, in reality you can probably go years without replacing anything but the carbon (if you choose to use it). Carbon is the only thing you absolutely have to replace otherwise it won't work.

I use washing up sponges in my filter (in the trays instead of the charcoal).
If you use these, make sure they are detergent free!

You want it so that your filter, filters gradually finer particles so get 2 grades of sponge of each extreme then when you stack your filter do it from course to fine from input to output. You don't need replace filter medium until it literally falls apart in fact doing so is very bad for the bacteria that removes the dissolved chemicals that will harm your fish.
