got free gambusia today

they are very elusive, i have a log in the barrel and they hide under that when i go near them
are birds a problem? i saw a little bird drinking from it today and it might be catching my fish
If birds will drink from the water those fish are in, there shouldn't be a problem. But depending on the kind of birds, your fish can be eaten. If it's a finch, they'll leave your fish alone. For those are just seed eaters.

No worries. Sparrows belong to the finches family. They won't eat fish. They will probably only drink over there.

ok! good to know they only use it as a drinking place.
they've been there for many years now :)

If you need any help with birds I’m your guy! My family are mostly biologists, and my mom is an ornithologist, so I can tell you what is eating what. Sparrows will only drink or take baths in your pond. My Gambusia Affinis is very elusive to the point where I see him probably once or twice a month!

some pigeons stopped by to walk around today are they harmful?

i tamed a school of them once. i just fed them every day to the point where they wouldn't run so much
maybe he is nervous because it's just himself? idk

Pigeons don’t do anything. They are very smart, tho, and as you said can be tamed and trained very easily. There are almost no small birds you need to look out for, especially in the United States…the only birds you would need to look out for are herons and egrets…ducks will not eat fish, and raptors mostly wont look for bodies of water as a food source. Raccoons are the things you need to worry about. Rats will also chew through pond liner…

Forgot to answer your doubt about rodent ability to chew through liner. As the guys said above, mice and rats will chew up and through the liner no problem ability-wise, it may be like a bubble gum to them. They can chew up far, far harder materials, if hard pressed - on par with their relatives squirrels and beavers. Now their motivation to do so may be your saving grace.

In abandoned houses, seasonally inhabited cottages, etc. hungry overwintering rodents eat up wallpaper with the glue, cloth, plastic, wire harnesses, plastic wire insulation, wooden furniture, etc. Hunger is a great motivator to try to feed even on inedible or hardly edible / digestible items.

Why they'd chew on rubber in the "wild", that is your yard, IDK. It seems to me to be a hit and miss. The risk of the "hit" Ken is indicating is surely worth avoiding. You will only taste the frustration of it when you have to repair or replace your punctured liner.”

That’s from a professional pond builder. He owns a public aquarium rescue, and goes by the name of ‘thebiggerthebetter’ on MFK.
