Do black Mollies make good pets? I was going to get one when I saw a betta fish for the first time. I was just wondering because I was thinking about getting some.

i have 6 females and they are great, never been any probs with bully or illness etc. i would recommend any mollies. :)

do you use salt with them??

Yes i do, however i keep male mollies in another tank (community)that is not salted, they appear to be OK. i just add salt to the girls tank because i only have mollies in it (6 black, 6 golddust & 6 white lyretail)

mollies can live in fresh water or salt water (not quite fully brackish) they are said to be healthier in a salted aquarium.
i personally have not noticed a difference between the 2 tanks i have and the condition of the fish.

oh, I am not keeping mine...If in fact I get any, in a salted tank.

my male ones are in a fresh water community tank with no issues, have been in there 2 years. so i would not worry about it :)

Can there be mixed genders in the same tank? Because I want males and females but I only have 1 tank. Is that OK?

yes you can a good ratio is 1 male to at least 2 females, however they breed like rabbits if you do that , so i would suggest just females unless you want loads of small fry. avoid males together if possible as i found that there can be bullying.

OK. Please do not say they breed like rabbits because rabbits can only breed every 2 months so it sorta makes me mad when people say that.

sorry to offend, its just a saying, i didnt know that about rabbits.

Also do they need filters? Or can they be in a normal tank without filters and heaters?

They do need filters and heaters and quite a bit of room to move about (not a betta tank). And while they can cope with freshwater, they do require hard alkaline clean water, else they will get longterm health damage.
