Good Idea?

8X goldfish (1 tiny (1 inch), 2 medium (1.5 inch), 1 medium/large (approx 1.7 inch), 4 large (2 inch to approx 3.2 inch)

Those are all tiny, they will grow to at least 6", and potentially up to 12" in body length. They will need a much larger tank in the near future: 4+*2*2 ft for fancy goldfish or 6+*2*2 ft for common goldfish. They live for 15-25+ years if well cared for.

The temperature is also high for common goldfish, and on the upper side of ok for fancy goldfish. And they will eat small minnows.

I have a pond so size isn't a problem, they are quite peaceful with the minnows actually and some of the smaller ones swim around with them from time to time. The bigger ones couldn't care less about them to be honest.

as for the temp, the tank is diy fan cooled (see this link http/www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/365170-diy-12-volt-brushless-cooling-fan/page__p__3046891__fromsearch__1#entry3046891 ) i am trying to persuade my dad to let me freeze some dechlorinated water so i can float that on the tank to cool it down.

when you say feed slightly less, i cant really do that! They're always hungry as i only feed them 2 times a day.

2 times per day as much as they can completely finish in 30-60 seconds and one day per week without food is the maximum you should be feeding. Less would be once per day, as much as they can completely finish in 30-60 seconds and two days per week without food.

Most fish will quite happily look "hungry" even when their stomach is so full of food that it is about to burst.

i dont switch it off unless i have to take it outside, it runs dry when i do a water change

EDIT: Actually, tyhe impeller is immersed in water that it is keeping from falling back into the filter box so i guess it is still lubricated in one way or another.

Switching off for maintenance is ok, I was referring to you mentioning that you switched it off for the night (which is not ok).

Well sorry you're overstocked,1 goldfish needs a minimum 20 gals , let alone all these in a 95 litre!! your filter isn't handling the load!!
Either put the goldfish in your pond or get a bigger tank & filter...

i'll put 2 of the bigger ones back in the pond, then see if that makes any difference, if not then more will go!

That's what another guy on here said.. one day he came home to find that all 20 of his minnow-sized fish had been eaten. They should be ok until the goldfish are 6" or so, but not guaranteed.

If it's that high only because of the air temperature, it's not worth doing the ice, better off just getting a larger tank to reduce temperature fluctuations between day and night (the air temperature is normally quite a bit cooler at night).

There's only one like that but he has a swimbalder deformity and so is a bit bloated all the time, the rest are rounded but not fat.

It is almost impossible to tell when a fish is overfed unless it's already dead.

The behaviour you are observing is not signs of hunger, it is your goldfish being conditioned to being fed at certain times of the day in a certain part of the tank. Their instinct is to seek food all the time and they know that that is the place they will get most at that time of day.

The point I was making is that you can easily feed less until your filter adjusts to the bio load.

I think she means that they need that space to grow to their full potential, which I agree with.

I did, but the main cost was the tank itself at £115 including everything in it, other wise the rest was treatments, medication, bulbs, foams and cartridges and a gravel cleaner!

i've got to go so probably wont be back for a while.

Then I would have saved for longer or gone for different species, if I were in your position. Yes, there were times when I couldn't afford larger tanks and was not allowed them in the family home anyway, which is why it was only recently that I was able to keep larger species.

Also, it is well worth looking for second hand tanks because they can go for as little as 10-25% of the new price, if you are patient enough.

parents wont let me have a bigger tank, tropicals, any more minnows (even if i get rid of some of the goldies) or spend any more money (well I DONT WANT TO SPEND ANYMORE seeing as i only have 90 left lol .
