I have a 30 gallon with two Goldfish, a common and a fantail. I want to do tropical, so I'm going to put my common in a local pond and give my fantail away on Craig's List. I want something unique and cool, like Silver Hatchetfish, a few Kuhli Loaches, and some other cool looking fish.

I have two Kuhli Loaches and I love them. They love to hide a lot. From what I've heard one should have more than two loaches as they love companionship.

Hmm, you could go something like

14x Silver Hatchets
14x Cardinal Tetras or other kind of tetra.
8-10x Kuhli Loaches
A pair of gouramis? Maybe some Platies? Swordtails? Or a school of 12x Praecox Rainbows?
For algae control, you could get an unlimited amount of cherry shrimp and amano shrimp :good:

if you want them to be very active, give them a lot of hiding places. Ironically, the more places they have to hide, the more they are out. :good:

You sure about those number? I was thinking I would only be able to house about 6 Hatchets and maybe 5 Loaches. Probably because I don't know a whole lot about fishkeeping, but it seems you do. Also, the only Shrimp available at my local Petsmart is Ghost Shrimp. How about them? I would assume the Loaches would probably eat them.

Can you get the tank dimentions? hatchet fish prefer more surface area with floating plants and some open spots at the top of the tank....and personally id say 6 hatchets...or a few more but it depends on the group sizes of fish you have depending on what else you wanna keep.

What filter do you use?

Top Fin Power Filter - 30 Gallons. Its an external one that hangs on the back.

Its just about 30 1/2" long which is left to right, about 18.5" in height and 14" wide on the sides.

How about something like this:
6 Silver Hatchets
5 Black Kuhli Loaches
2 Dwarf Gourami (I like the green ones)
Also do I need an air pump? If not, I was going to buy one for a 10 gallon just because I want an airstone in the back to make a bubble wall thing. And will Gouramis eat my plants? It says they nibble them.

I'd do 6-8 hatchets
Plus what crossfire said but we will need to know your filter type and your dimensions.

I'd do something like 6-8 hatchets 8-10 (at least 6) kuhli loach and 2 dg and there's still room for 6-10 of a type of tetra that catches your fancy but some are aggressive so choose one and run it by us before you buy it.

Oh yeah and your filters a hang on the back or HOB filter not an external. There's a difference. Internals are all the way inside the tank HOBs have a intake and output but they hang on the back and externals are completely outside the tank but has an intake and an output.

Oh ok. Thanks. But do they need an air pump? If they don't I was going to put a 10 gallon air pump in just so I can have a neat bubble effect with an airstone. Also do Gouramis eat plants? If so I can't get them because it will eat my Java Fern.

They shouldn't bother it and I'm sure the decoration will be fine. I run 2 pumps one on my new ten gallon and 1 on my 30 gallon. I'm sure the decoration bubbled will be just fine.
