hi there,

hope you are all well. my fishless cycle is almost done!! nearly time to add fish!! i have a 90l tank, double filtered and i am going to add 8 tiger barbs, 10 cardinal and 6 corys. what should i add first??

thank you for the advice (i have never kept tigers before!! i used to keep discus...much more peaceful!!...want an active tank!!)

yikes... tigers and cardinals? Good luck with that. The cardinals I had were the most sluggish and scatty things ever - no shoaling, not really even any moving, just sort of hanging around in the plants. Not sure they'd have liked tiger barbs. But I hope it works, it'll be fun if it does!

do you not think that cardinals and tigers will work together? i wasn't sure but a few people on here said they'd be ok. i am aa big fan of cardinals and think i must have been lucky as mine have always been active and shoaling!! what do you think would work better as a shoaling group mid tank?

my serpae tetras are fun and a great colour. you need at least six as they can be nippy. apparently they go well with semi aggressive fish. my cardinals just chill around my amazon sword really, i think mine would freak if they were put with tiger. also the serpae are great at nipping in fast and grabbing the food.

Yeah, my gut says that the cardinals would not be happy in a tank with a fish as active as tiger barbs. But that's just me... I guess you could give it a go on the proviso that if they are getting stressed then you take the cardinals back and get something else.

The silvertip tetras I have are very active, which I'm quite enjoying after the relatively subdued nature of the cardinals (I had rummys and harlequins before as well, which were sort of mediumly active). I'm looking now for tetras which are also active and have settled on Blue Tetras, and am considering others like Columbian Red Fins or Black Neons.

yeah caz, i used to have harlequins and remember them being pretty active. if i was to go with silvertips or serpaes, how many do you think i should add? to re-cap, the tank is 90l, double filtered and will hopefully contain, in addition to the group of tetras, 8-10 tiger barbs and 6 albino corys. what stock would you recommend?

you could probably start with 8-10 of a tetra too, and then see how the groups are doing. If you feel they need more members you can always add more very easily. It's harder to make the group smaller than bigger!

(ps, sorry, I'm actually a bit crap when it comes to stocking!)

thanks for that. i have just spoken to a friend who would be able to take the cardinals if they were stressed. do you think i should risk it or go straight for silver tips or serpae? sorry for being a pest!! just want to make sure i get it right as i've not had tigers before so not sure what to keep with them!!!

My gut says, don't do it! I'm a big believer in following my gut. But you should follow your own, don't follow mine! I've not had tigers either, but from what I've heard they are like, I just can't see them mixing well with a chilled out fish like cardinals.

ok thanks caz...my gut says the same as yours!! i will add the tigers first then the corys and that will give me more time to research the tetras you suggested! i'll let you know how i get on and what i decide on.
