Ok, so basically I had a betta which died. And I was wondering if fancy goldfish are easier to look after?

All my friends have had some, no water changes, no cycling nothing like that but they still live?! Are they just generally hardier breed of fish, if they are I want some! Also no heater bills. Hopefully I'll have some more luck with them.

goldfish tend to be quite a hardy fish but that doesn't mean you can just throw them into an unclean uncycled little bowl

yes they can live like this just like we can live in a small filty cage but we dont enjoy it do we?

Goldfish are no easier to keep alive its just down to luck that the fish survive and get through the cycling stages etc for the each goldfish that your friends have I imagine that a good 10 that have died within the same week as them.

Keeping a goldfish is no excuse for not keeping up maintenance for them and keeping fish in a clean, safe tank.

goldfish require 20gals for the 1st then 10gal for each after that, as they are very heavy waste producers, they may 'live' in an uncycled bowl but they will not thrive and reach there full potential

Personally I would go for tropical. There is a much more broader variety of fish to keep and with a big tank you could keep lots of interesting species. That is just my opinion though. Hope it helps.

As the others have said, whatever you choose to keep, there will always be maintenance to do. Tropical fish, for the most part, are not hard to care for, or keep happy if you pay attention to advice, do your research and have patience.

If you do decide to keep goldfish then read about them and their requirements and please do not look to others for advice when they just chuck them in the smallest bowl they can find and leave them. After all, that is not fair...why get them in the first place?

Goldfish produce quite a lot of waste too, so maybe dont think about what is easiest to keep but whether you will devote the time to keeping their habitat clean and fish friendly...whatever route you go down.

Agree with what the others have said above.

I must say though, that although I am Tropical all the way, I have seen some fancy goldfish a my lfs that do appeal.

Sorry but 60 litre is too small for goldfish.

Would you like to live in a room thats small & cramped, with no room to move?

60 litres, aqua art. Yeah i know your gonna say its not big enough.

We'll only say it's too small cause it is too small... not cause we enjoy telling people what they don't want to hear...
Thing is goldfish are one of the few fish that have actually proven to suffer from stunting if they're not kept in a large enough tank.

how much are fancy goldfish?

Pretty cheap, they're often mass produced abroad leading to them being very cheap.

Please don't disregard what people are trying to tell you. Especially when there are alternatives such as white cloud mountain minnows for example. Or perhaps a paradise fish and some white cloud mountain minnows.

Just out of interest... if you have a thermometer in the tank atm (if it has water in it), then switch the heater off (if it's still on) and see what temp the water goes down too.

Depending on how warm your house is most of the time you might well be able to keep quite a few fish without heaters

To be honest there is little difference in running costs between cold water and tropical tanks as they all need constant filtration.Goldfish deserve just as much care and clean water as any other fish. I treat mine exctly the same as my tropicals and bring them indoors in winter. They also get treats such as bloodworm.

Your tank is too small for goldfish but paradise fish are lovely cative fish that don;t grow too big, unlike goldfish. Great fun to watch--and they build bubble nests!I have some and recommend them
Heaters operate on a thermostat so even though I live in a very cold draughty old house my tropical tank heaters only come on a few hours daily if that. I hve 5 tropical fish tanks and 3 heated turtle tnaks but my electricity bills aren't high as all my tanks are insulted with polystyrene and I cover them with old duvets at night in winter.
