Golden Gourami Keeps Getting Stuck

My Gold Gourami has been doing well since I got him a couple months ago. However, the other day I found him wrapped around the intake tube of my Rena XP2. I unplugged the filter and he swam away. This morning I woke up only to find him wrapped around the intake AGAIN. I unplugged the filter and he didn't even move right away. This time he slowly peeled away. It also took several minutes to return to his normal shape. He's the biggest fish in the tank, and the only one getting stuck to filters. I'd like to keep him instead of having to trade him in. Any suggestions?

he should be able to swim past the pull of the filter without sticking to it, the only time a fish has done this for me is when the fish was unwell before getting stuck.

it says to me that the fish is weaker than usual so the first port of call would be to try and diagnose what's wrong with him, if you have a hospital/quarantine tank with a smaller filter then move him into there for the time being.
