Hi all,

Considering running my Juwel 180 vision without a hood to get around my ongoing light fitting problem.

Are there any drawbacks which I need to be aware of? We've got no kids and our dogs aren't big enough to get anywhere near the tank, so no worries about anything getting in there. I know water will evaporate over time, but if I keep topping it up, I can't think of any other issues.

Any advice?

some fish, like danios, like to jump occasionally, so it's possible you might lose 1 or 2 that way.

Actually the major issue is fish jumping. They jump all the time. Even though some species are much, much worse about it than others, lots of different types will up and do it. If you ran your level at 3/4 or half height it might not be a problem but your stocking level would have to go down coorespondingly.

Fish jump, as others have already said. You will also lose a lot of water during the winter heating season and even in summer if you live somewhere where air conditioning is needed. The dry air around the tank will pull a lot of moisture right out of your tank. I lose over an inch a day in my 6 foot tank during winter when the air is the house is dry. I make it back up using RO water, the minerals did not evaporate with the water.
