I get my tax return back in a few weeks (hopefully) and after fixing my car I should have about enough to invest in a pressuirzed system. from my minimal research I have done I see I need:

1. Tank (duh): I'm gonna go with a 5 pounder.

2: Regulator: Looking at an inexpensive JBJ regulator on CO2-canisters.com. Is JBJ a good brand?

3: Needle valve: Also found one on above mentioned site for 25 bucks. Is there anything specific I should be looking for with a needle valve.

Am I missing anything? I already have a ladder type diffuser, will this be adequate? I will also be ordering 25 feet of the suggested "co2 proof" tubing, is this nescessary?

Answers some questions, is a solenoid a mandatory purchase? I want to set my lighting and CO2 on a timer to go on and off at the same time, will I need a solenoid?

From what I understand yes that is the Purpos of a Solinoid.. it's connected to a mechanical timer to avoid wastage of CO2 gas during hours of darkness. they can be purchased via good LFS, online or via ebay.

Well thank you, that answers my questions pretty well....with the addition of a solenoid it brings my total to $255.56....but that includes shipping, thats not too bad.

I just relized that the regulator I'm looking at already has a needle valve and solenoid built in....I guess....that makes it a lot cheaper!

Exactly........i was just going to point that out to you, you should be able to pick up a CO2 cylinder for under $100, make sure it has the hydro test in date, CO2 cylinders in the US need to be tested every 2 years, dont buy a cylinder new as it may just be swopped out for a different one when you go to get it refilled.

JBJ, Milwaukee and Azoo are common regulator brands used in planted tanks in the USA.

Yeah, I felt kinda dumb after I realized that Zig! I guess when I get my tax return I'll get my regulator and some CO2 proof tubing then run up to the welding supply shop that is 5 minutes from my house and pick up a ten pound cylinder. Stupid IRS....why do they have to take so long.
