Give Me Some Idea's

Having had a look round my LFS today theres nowhere round here that seems to sell that many apisto's - I think theres only the one flavour (and not one of the particularly interesting ones) in my LFS.

I don't know if its just me being picky or grouchy through lack of sleep, but it seems like theres sod all worth getting.

**Edit, ignore that - it is just me being a grumpy so and so, I'd just woken up.

Having looked on the species index, it mentions that I could get away with Rainbow Sharks in a 36" tank. Does that ring true, and what sort of numbers? And do they shoal and move about in a similar way to Bala/Silver Sharks?

Have a look on Ebay, there's a fabbie selection of apistos on there right now, what is your LFS is it Wildwoods?

No its MA, I might pop down to Wildwoods to have a look tomorrow - they aren't too far away.

Just had a look on ebay, Apistogramma cacatuoides is a stunning fish.

I have a thing for apistogramma borelli too

I think that is a beautiful looking fish, and the seller does seem very reputable. In fact I'd go so far as to say I've fallen truly madly deeply for that fish.

The apisto tank idea is growing on me.
What I'm considering is to set the tank up, cycle it then add either some of my Danio's from my 65 or pick up a few Platys and leave them in the tank for a couple of months, then once its matured abit more I can start adding the Apistos. You reckon that sounds like a plan?

I saw those fish earlier on ebay they are lush i had to click back to look again
You can cycle your new filter in your established tank for a 4-6 weeks just hang it inside and it will cycle without the bother of exposing danios or platys to a new cycle or even owning platys at all lol

Already done, I keep a spare filter running in my coldwater tank so if I need to quarantine I can get my QT tank out of the loft and tada, instant cycle.

Its not so much a case of cycling that I'm thinking of-I've read that apisto's are better off in a mature tank and it suits me to leave it a couple of months before I go shelling out on the fish themselves. Give me plenty of time to aquascape etc.

Thats a thought, for apisto's what sort of aquascape should I be going for - loads of slate with a few plants, or a heavily planted tank.

Yes you could have rocks and slate but definitely driftwood have an abundance of driftwood because they like quite soft acidic water conditions and they must be stable as they are quite sensitive as with any dwarf cichlid really. Also I have read that their biotope is more leaf litter than actual plants, but maybe a few vallis would provide them some cover.

south american biotype theme, with some nice bogwood, plenty of plants and one or two small rockwork caves. :good:

Provide with hiding places/caves made from driftwood or pots. A well-planted tank should also be provided. The Cockatoos are sensitive to water quality issues, so regular water changes are a must, 1-2 per week. Cockatoos can be sensitive to medications as well.

Thats not a problem, I do 2-3 a week with my rams as it is.
